Week 1
GAME OF THE WEEK
North Carolina 12 ... at Connecticut 10
North Carolina got a safety thanks to a holding call in the end zone
with 1:32 to play to cap off a fourth quarter comeback. Connecticut had
a 10-0 lead on a 47-yard Dave Teggart field goal and a four-yard
Jordan Todman touchdown run, but the last 11 minutes belonged to UNC
with a 22-yard field goal and a two-yard Zack Pianalto touchdown catch
with 2:36 to play. Neither offense could get going in the rain with the
Tar Heels outgaining the Huskies 268 yards to 196.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK West Virginia QB Jarrett Brown completed 24-of-31 passes for 334 yards and four touchdowns with an interception, and he ran ten times for 73 yards in the win over East Carolina.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Cincinnati … at Cincinnati 70 ... SE
Missouri State 3 ...No team in America has played better over the first two weeks of the season. Rutgers and SE Missouri State might not be world-beaters, but the Bearcats have been tremendously sharp with explosiveness, consistency, and the type of midseason form that should make Oregon State scared next week. Tony Pike has been on fire in a perfect command of the offense, and now, after the blowout win, the depth got some much needed experience. This has been a perfect start.
Connecticut … North Carolina 12 ... at Connecticut 10 ... The Huskies simply couldn't get the offense going in the second half and couldn't get the defense off the field. Lawrence Wilson and the defense did a nice job of keeping the UNC ground game in check, and the defensive front did a fantastic job of getting into the backfield with six sacks, but the passing game failed to do anything to get the ball down the field for a second week in a row while UNC bottled up Jordan Todman and the ground attack. The linebackers should do a good job against Baylor and QB Robert Griffin next week, but the O needs to find a spark soon.
That could be hard after QB Zach Frazer suffered a
knee injury.
Louisville … Didn’t Play This Week
Pitt … Pitt 54 ... at Buffalo 27 ... The Pitt offense is exploding. Dion Lewis is a keeper at running back, able to catch and run equally well, while Bill Stull came up with a nice day to get the Panthers up early. The defense struggled against the Buffalo passing game, giving up too many midrange passes for big plays, while the D came up with the turnovers needed to stay comfortably ahead. Next up is Navy, and the key will be to get up early again.
Rutgers … at Rutgers 45 ...
Howard 7 ... After the Cincinnati debacle, Rutgers needed a blowout win to get the season on track. More importantly, this was a chance for Tom Savage to open it up and get the passing game going. He's the franchise for the future and needs all the work he can get, and he'll get another scrimmage against FIU before dealing with Maryland. On the down side, the offense didn't keep the chains moving converting 3-of-10 third down chances; Savage has to be sharper and not just explosive.
South Florida … South Florida 35 ... at Western Kentucky 13 ... The Bulls were fine against Western Kentucky, and came through when needed to put the game away, but it's time to start dominating more. The embarrassing non-conference slate continues with Charleston Southern up next before Florida State, and everything needs to be humming. DE George Selvie has to show up, Matt Grothe has to be more consistent, and a blowout win is a must to be prepared for the trip to Tallahassee. However, this is when the young team is supposed to grow up, and it's doing it.
Syracuse … at Penn State 28 ... Syracuse 7 ... The defense couldn't get off the field early, and the offense couldn't get anything going to take any sort of control, and the game was all but over before it really started. Greg Paulus wasn't awful in his second straight game, but he wasn't a difference-maker and couldn't make up for the problems with the ground game. On the plus side, the defensive front did a nice job with the Penn State offensive line able to stuff the run and keep the game from getting truly ugly. If the run D plays like this next week, the Orange have an honest shot of beating Northwestern.
West Virginia… at West Virginia 35 ... East Carolina 20 ... ECU's offense couldn't come up with anything in the second half even when the chances were there. West Virginia turned the ball over four times and there were 11 penalties, but the Pirates couldn't take advantage. Patrick Pinkney was too erratic and the defense didn't generate enough pressure into the backfield, but the biggest problem was the second half without any running game to count on to steady the team. Now comes North Carolina; the ground attack isn't going to start producing.
