at Michigan State 26 … Michigan 20 OT
Michigan State's Larry Caper ran for a 23-yard touchdown in overtime for a win after Chris Rucker had ended Michigan's possession with an interception in the end zone. Before the pick, Michigan's Tate Forcier had a tremendous finish with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Darryl Stonum with just over four minutes to play and a nine-yard strike to Roy Roundtree with two seconds to play to force overtime. Caper ran for a one-yard score and Brett Swenson hit two field goals for the Spartans on the way to a 20-6 lead, but the defense struggled late.
Wisconsin RB John Clay ran 32 times for 184 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Minnesota.

… Penn State 35 ...  at Illinois 17 ... The disaster continues. It's not just that the defensive front is having such a nightmare of a time, it is, and it's not that the team is missing talent; it has it. It's that the offense is so utterly inept against defenses with a pulse. Against Ohio State and Penn State, forget it. The Illini bombed away to make it cosmetically close in the final few minutes, but it was never a game in a home appearance that had to be a good one after such a clunker against the Buckeyes. There were several big plays in the passing game, but not enough of them proved to be meaningful. Now the team is undergoing a shake-up with Juice Williams being benched for Eddie McGee. Will this be a spark, or a wake-up call? There's still time to turn things around with winnable games against Indiana and Purdue up next, but they're both on the road.

… Ohio State 33 ... at Indiana 14 ... As expected, the pass rush continues to be solid, but it's not bringing the results needed. The IU defensive front didn't do nearly enough to bother Terrelle Pryor, while there were too many mistakes to win a game like this. With nine penalties, to OSU's two, and with three penalties, IU had to be far tighter and QB Ben Chappell had to make more things happen down the field. A bowl game is still possible, but it'll be a must to take advantage of the easy part of the schedule, with at Virginia, Illinois, and at Northwestern up next.

… at Iowa 24 ... Arkansas State 21 ... Fine, so this is what Iowa is going to be. The offense finally started to wake up a bit with a strong first quarter against Arkansas State, but the attack bogged down, there wasn't enough production from the ground game, and the game got way too close. The Iowa D struggled with the mobility and moxie of ASU QB Corey Leonard, and now comes another baller of a quarterback with Tate Forcier and Michigan up next. The focus should be there this week, but it would be nice if the offense could come up with a more complete performance.

… at Michigan State 26 ... Michigan 20 OT ... Tate Forcier has showed he can bring the team back when pressed late, and he has shown a flair for the dramatic, but he has to be better for the first 50 minutes of games. He hasn't been efficient enough considering the running game has helped to take the pressure off, but remember, he's still just a true freshman five games into his career. However, against MSU, the ground game didn't provide the punch needed, gaining just 28 yards, and the offense never had the ball having it for just over 20 minutes. Against Iowa's defense next week, Forcier has to be mistake-free and the ground game has to get going to have a chance.

Michigan State
… at Michigan State 26 ... Michigan 20 OT ... It's not an overstatement to say the win saved the season, and now the Spartans have to use this win the rest of the way. The Iowa game is at home and the toughest road game left is at Minnesota, so the chances will be there to make this game the spark to a big run. This was a balanced effort with several players playing key roles, but the defense struggled under pressure late and couldn't do enough to get to Tate Forcier late even with three sacks on the day. This was the team's best performance this year against the run, and now it has to carry forward.

… Wisconsin 31 ... at Minnesota 28 ... Minnesota should've had a bigger lead than 13-10 at halftime with penalties and turnovers proving to be too costly, but in the second half, the bigger problem was the inability to hold up against the Badger running game. The offense gave it a go late, but the hole had already been dug. This is a turning point. Last year the Gophers went into the tank over the second half of the season, and with dates at Penn State and at Ohio State to follow, the Purdue game next week means everything to the season.

… Northwestern 27  ... at Purdue 21 ... The Wildcats might not always be pretty, and they can't get any production out of the running backs, but they bounced back in a big way after the loss to Minnesota with a great rally, and a nice defensive stand, to get past Purdue. This was a huge step toward a bowl with winnable games against Miami University and Indiana ahead, but to beat the better teams, more offensive weapons have to emerge to help out Mike Kafka.

Ohio State
… Ohio State 33 ... at Indiana 14 ... The Ohio State defense is humming at just the right time holding IU to 18 yards, while Terrelle Pryor appears to have taken his game to another level. Beating Indiana might not be seen as that big a deal, but Pryor showed that he could spread the passing game around and could get the running game going like he has been expected to. Finding a running mate is a must, and Brandon Saine came through with 113 yards against the Hoosiers. Up next is Wisconsin, who poses a dangerous challenge with a balanced offense, a pounding running game, and an overall bad matchup for the Buckeyes.

Penn State
…Penn State 35 ... at Illinois 17 ... Penn State finally, finally got the running game going. The offensive line destroyed the Illinois defensive front as the running game actually worked with 338 yards and five scores. Daryll Clark wasn't able to produce too many plays deep, but he was efficient and effective. After the problems with turnovers against Iowa, giving away just one fumble was a big step forward. The cream-puffs continue with Eastern Illinois up next. LB Sean Lee missed his second straight game with a dinged up knee, and he'll likely sit against EIU with Minnesota to follow.

…Northwestern 27 ... at Purdue 21 ... Purdue has to be pulling its hair out. Sitting at 1-4 with four straight losses, the Boilermakers are roughly four plays away from being 5-0 after misfiring on yet another late rally attempt. The six turnovers against Northwestern were a killer, and the inability to come up with points in the second half were because of all the problems. The fumbles killed the momentum time and again, and they might force the offense to go more with Joey Elliott and the passing game. After this crushing home loss, next week's game at Minnesota is a must for bowl hopes.

… Wisconsin 31 ...  at Minnesota 28 ... The Badgers can't close. They dominated in the second half against Minnesota, had Michigan State in the bag, and should've been able to close out Fresno State and Northern Illinois with ease, but they couldn't put the games away and had to fight in the final moments. They have to be able to put the foot on the throat, especially with Ohio State and Iowa coming up. UW can win those games, but they have to be air tight. They have to put together a full sixty minutes.
