GAME OF THE WEEK

at Arizona State 24 … Washington 17
The game appeared to be going into overtime, but inexplicably, Arizona State had two wide open receivers available with five seconds to play, and Danny Sullivan found Chris McGaha for a 50-yard score. The Sun Devils were up 17-7 in the third quarter helped by a one-yard Sullivan run and a 32-yard T.J. Simpson scoring catch, but Washington came back with a 23-yard Chris Polk touchdown run and a 29-yard Erik Folk field goal. The Huskies started off the scoring on a 49-yard Devin Aguilar catch. The two teams combined for 21 penalties with UW’s Vontaze Burfict getting nailed for three personal foul calls.

AND

USC 34 … at Notre Dame 27
In a thriller, Jimmy Clausen misfired a pass into the end zone in what appeared to be the end of the game, but with USC celebrating on the field, one second was put back on the clock and Clausen had another chance. He missed again, and USC came away with the tough win. The Trojans were up 20 in the fourth quarter, but Clausen rallied the Irish with a two-yard touchdown run and a 15-yard scoring pass to Golden Tate to get within seven. That would be it, though, for the Irish scoring. USC got up on two short touchdown runs from Allen Bradford and Joe McKnight, and two Matt Barkley touchdown passes to Damian Williams from 41 and 20 yards away. USC hadn’t given up a touchdown pass coming into the game, but it allowed two to Tate, who caught a 45-yarder to go along with his second score. Jurrell Casey and Taylor Mays each made ten tackles for the Trojans.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Arizona QB Nick Foles completed 40-of-51 passes for 415 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Stanford.

CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Arizona
… at Arizona 43 ... Stanford 38 ... Nick Foles has been fantastic, and while he’s going to make a few mistakes now and then, he’s turning into one of the nation’s most dangerous passers. Coming off the heartbreaker against Washington, the Wildcats came back roaring with a brilliant passing day from Foles and a little bit of pop from RB Nic Grigsby, but the defense sputtered and struggled against the Stanford balance. Even so, Arizona got the win even though not everything was working as well as hoped defensively. That won’t be a problem with the offensively challenged UCLA and Washington State up next, and as long as Foles stay hot, the Wildcats have a chance to hang with everyone left on the schedule. However, the next two weeks are must wins with a brutal finishing kick.

Arizona State
… at Arizona State 24 ... The defense has been fantastic. The secondary allowed a big play early on and a big touchdown dash in the third, and that was it. There were nine penalties and QB Danny Sullivan was inconsistent and struggled, but with one big touchdown pass, his career and the season might have taken a big turn. With the nation’s No. 7 defense, the Sun Devils have a shot to pull off some big wins over the next few weeks. Sullivan, though, has to be better in potential shootouts against Stanford and Cal, and he has to be fantastic to give ASU a shot against USC and Oregon in November. Washington 17 ...

California
… California 35 ... at UCLA 26 ... With two weeks off after the ugly losses to Oregon and USC, Cal became Cal again with Jahvid Best tearing off big plays, Shane Vereen coming up with several big dashes, and Kevin Riley effectively moving the offense. However, the Cal defense was back to being the Cal defense. UCLA isn’t getting any offense on anyone, but it was able to move the ball without much of a problem. Giving up 448 yards and several big plays to a horrible Bruin attack is a big concern with some decent offenses still to face. The stats are going to look a whole bunch better after next week’s exercise against Washington State.

Oregon

Stanford
… at Air Force 43 ... Stanford 38 ... Stanford has fought well and is far better than it has been in past years, but with two straight road losses, it’s a critical time for the program. There isn’t a layup the rest of the way with Arizona State’s strong defense up next, and then Oregon, at USC, Cal, and Notre Dame. Four of the five games are at home, but the Cardinal needs two wins, and needs a healthy Toby Gerhart. Andrew Luck threw for 423 yards against the Wildcats, but when he needed to connect on a few key plays late, he didn’t. This is still one of the Pac 10’s most exciting teams and has a chance to make some noise in the title chase with a little more on defense.

UCLA
… California 46 ... at UCLA 26 ... Kevin Prince got to chuck it around a little bit and he threw for 311 yards and a score, but the offense sputtered in the second half when it had its chances. The Bruins marched well, but settled for four field goals and blew it late with Prince throwing a pick six to all but end the game. If UCLA is going to win at Arizona or Oregon State next week, the defense has to be back to being the UCLA defense. Cal is going to light up most teams, but so will the Wildcats and Beavers. The Bruins don’t have a consistent enough attack to keep up.

USC
… USC 34 ... at Notre Dame 27 ... Matt Barkley can throw. That was never really a question, at least as far as his talent, but he hasn’t been asked to push the ball deep in a pressure situation. He has been great at making the short to midrange throws, he did that against Ohio State, but against the Irish he had to make more big things happen, and he did. He always kept his vision downfield and he pressured the Irish corners throughout. However, the D had a tough time closing. The secondary didn’t give Jimmy Clausen any good looks into the end zone at the very end, and the Trojans survived through a shaky final ten minutes. Now comes the revenge game against Oregon State before going to Oregon for what could be for the Pac 10 title. USC has to keep its focus.

Washington
… at Arizona State 24 ... Washington 17 ... A week after an improbable, miraculous win over Arizona, the Huskies blew it with a mix up in the secondary, and now the season is in big trouble. There’s little margin for error for UW, and with three turnovers, 12 penalties, including a slew of dumb ones, the mistakes led to the loss. Even with all the problems, UW had its chance late and blew it. For all the good things the team has done, it has lost three of its last four games with the one win coming against the Wildcats. Now comes the hard part with Oregon, at UCLA, and at Oregon State up next. The defense has to be far better and there needs to be more from the running game to get through the stretch.
