GAME OF THE WEEK

at Georgia Tech 30 … Wake Forest 27 OT
Georgia Tech was 0-for-4 on fourth down conversions, but still head coach Paul Johnson blew off the game-tying field goal attempt in overtime and allowed QB Josh Nesbitt to barrel forward for the first down, leading to a three-yard scoring run on the next play to get the win. Wake Forest got a 34-yard Jimmy Newman field goal in overtime, but the defense couldn’t hold a Tech running game that rumbled for 412 yards. The Demon Deacons had a chance in regulation to get into field goal range, but Derrick Morgan came up with one of his three sacks to force OT. Wake’s Riley Skinner threw two touchdown passes Devon Brown, but Georgia Tech got a 59-yard touchdown dash from Jonathan Dwyer and a 12-yard run from Nesbitt to keep pace.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Clemson RB C.J. Spiller ran 22 times for 165 yards, caught three passes for 67 yards and a score, returned three kickoffs for 71 yards, and returned a punt for nine yards in the win over Florida State.

CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Boston College
… Didn’t Play This Week

Clemson
… at Clemson 40 ... Florida State 24 ... Now on a four game winning streak, and with everything clicking for the offense in the team’s third straight 40-point performance, Clemson is in the driver’s seat to win the Atlantic. But to do it, the defense has to be a little bit tighter, like it was in the second half against Florida State, and there can’t be mental letdowns. Basically, Clemson can’t be Clemson; it has to be consistent. Keeping C.J. Spiller healthy is a must, and now that the spotlight is on, the Tigers have to produce. If Kyle Parker continues to throw as confidently as he did against the Seminoles, Clemson should be able to get through games against NC State and Virginia on the way to face Georgia Tech for the ACC title.

Duke
… at North Carolina 19 ... Duke 6 ... The offense had been so hot and so impressive, and then it all broke down because the line couldn’t protect Thaddeus Lewis. The Blue Devils haven’t had any running game to speak of, and it was stuffed cold by the Tar Heels to put bowl hopes in jeopardy. It’s not going to be easy over the next few weeks with Georgia Tech and at Miami up next, but there’s still a date with Wake Forest to possible get the sixth win. UNC’s defense is playing extremely well; watch for the Duke O to get back on track next week against the Yellow Jackets.

Florida State
… at Clemson 40 ... Florida State 24 ... For all the problems Florida State has had, at least the passing game was clicking. Against Clemson, Jermaine Thomas and the running game were fine, but Christian Ponder finally had a dud of a performance throwing four interceptions in an attempt to keep up the pace. With all the problems with the coaching staff and defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews, it wasn’t a good enough game from the Seminole D to show that things could be turned around. C.J. Spiller was busy doing whatever he wanted to with big play after big play, while Kyle Parker threw too well on the beleaguered FSU secondary. Now it’s going to take wins over Wake Forest and Maryland just to get to a bowl game. Forget about hanging around with Florida in the regular season finale.

Georgia Tech
… at Georgia Tech 30 ... Wake Forest 27 OT ... The running game continues to be amazing, but considering the Yellow Jackets ran for 412 yards, they didn’t control the game nearly enough. Even so, the offense is humming with confidence, the defense, while soft, is coming up big when it absolutely has to, and Tech is a win against Duke away from going to the ACC title game. Tech is now getting to a point where it might be a BCS team even if it loses in the championship, but it has to beat Duke and Georgia to go 11-1 and be all but assured of a big game slot. To win those, the offense can’t turn the ball over and the pass defense has to come up with a big play at some point. Watch out for Duke’s Thaddeus Lewis to throw for 350 yards next week.

Maryland
… at NC State 38 ... Maryland 31 ... Maryland’s ugly season got a lot worse as QB Chris Turner was lost with a knee injury as the team is now ensured of a losing season. The running game can’t get going as the line continues to have problems. Even with a brilliant year, and a great game, from LB Alex Wujciak, the Term defense couldn’t keep the Pack in check. The takeaways were there, but the offense couldn’t produce in the second half. It doesn’t get any easier with Virginia Tech and at Florida State up next.

Miami
… at Miami 52 .. Virginia 17 ... Miami might not be able to win the ACC title unless Georgia Tech stumbles, but it’s positioning itself in a position for a BCS spot by continuing to win and continuing to look impressive. The Canes showed off all their speed and all their talent in the blowout win, especially with the phenomenal punt return for a score from Thearon Collier, while the O line had one of its best game in weeks. Now the job is to keep the focus with a tough trip to North Carolina coming up next. That’s going to be more of a battle than it might appear.

North Carolina
… at North Carolina 19 ... Duke 6 ... It might not have been the prettiest of performances, but considering how hot Duke has been offensively, keeping the attack to 125 of total yards of offense, is impressive. Robert Quinn had a monster game with three sacks, while Ryan Houston saved the offense, with RB Shaun Draughn going out with a shoulder injury, with 37 carries. There were 11 penalties and the offense stalled time and again in scoring position, but the Tar Heels are going on a nice run just in time to deal with Miami.

NC State
… at NC State 38 ... Maryland 31 ... What happened to the Russell Wilson who was such a caretaker? He’s taking more shots and more chances, and it shows. The running game provided a little bit of help, but it only averaged 3.4 yards per carry. The defense did its job, but turnovers and a missed play on special teams allowed a bad Maryland team to stay alive. The Pack can’t be so sloppy against Clemson or Virginia Tech in the next two weeks. It’s going to take a clean sweep, with North Carolina to finish up, to go bowling.

Virginia
… at Miami 52 .. Virginia 17 ... Darren Childs made 15 tackles and Steve Greer 14, but the Cavalier defense got ripped apart by a Miami running game that struggled for most of the year. Marc Verica couldn’t get the offense moving with just 75 yards through the air, and while Rashawn Jackson ran well, he only got eight carries. Going 2-of-12 on third downs was the biggest problem, but the lack of offensive punch continues to be the Achilles heel. On a three-game losing streak, it’s going to take a miracle, needing to beat BC, Clemson, and Virginia Tech, to get to six wins.

Virginia Tech
… Virginia Tech 16 ... at East Carolina 3 ... Ryan Williams bounced back nicely from the lost fumble against North Carolina and carried the offense. Tech wasn't going to do anything crazy against ECU; defense, running, and not screwing up. That was the gameplan and it worked perfectly. However, it wasn't a pretty performance offensively. The passing game struggled to do anything big and the game was way too close late, but Tech controlled the ball and the clock late and never let ECU make it interesting. There shouldn't be any problems over the last three games (Maryland, NC State, and Virginia), but the offense has to do more to avoid an upset.

Wake Forest
… at Georgia Tech 30 ... Wake Forest 27 OT ... This has been as rough a year as Wake Forest could’ve dreamed of. Now, to get to a bowl, it’s going to have to take wins over Florida State and at Duke, but the six wins should’ve been secured long ago. The close wins aren’t coming with two overtime losses, a three-point loss to Navy, a three-point loss to Baylor, and a one-point heartbreaker to Miami. Riley Skinner found his passing touch with a nice day, and the team stayed alive despite being rumbled on for 412 yards on the ground. And now it’s time to prepare for another shootout with the Seminoles coming to Winston-Salem.
