GAME OF THE WEEK

Boise State 45 … at Louisiana Tech 35
Boise State was cruising up 27-7 in the first half helped by a 40-yard Titus Young touchdown catch, but Louisiana Tech roared back highlighted by a 75-yard interception return for a score from Josh Victorian and a brilliant five-yard touchdown catch from Dennis Morris to pull the Bulldogs within two. But the Broncos were able to pull away late with a 12-yard Austin Pettis touchdown catch and a 44-yard Jeremy Avery scoring dash. Boise State outgained Louisiana Tech 507 yards to 250.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick completed 9-of-14 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown, and he ran 11 times for 115 yards and three scores in the win over San Jose State.

CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Boise State
… Boise State 45 ... at Louisiana Tech 35 ... Louisiana Tech did a nice job of coming back and making Boise State work, but the defense was a major disappointment. The Broncos are efficient and talented offensively, but once again, Tech’s lack of run defense was a problem and the struggles on the defensive line were an issue. It doesn’t get much better with trips to LSU and Fresno State up next. If the Bulldogs don’t win at least one of them, the bowl hunt is gone.

Fresno State
… Fresno State 31 ... at Idaho 21 ... Winners of five in a row, Fresno State is playing at a high level with all the offensive parts working. Ryan Colburn was a perfect 14-of-14, and while he didn’t take too many chances down the field, he made the throws needed to keep the offense moving. Ryan Mathews was his typical self, taking charge of the game from the start with his 77-yard touchdown dash, and there wasn’t too much of a threat the rest of the way. Now the team has a fight on its hands going to Nevada to face its running game. Considering Fresno is 92nd in the nation against the run, there could be problems.

Hawaii
… at Hawai‘i 49 ... Utah State 36 ... Hawaii?! 360 rushing yards?!? Utah State might not have much of a run defense, but this is Hawaii, and this is an offense that hasn’t do much over the last several weeks over the course of a six-game losing streak. The passing game wasn’t ignored, with Bryant Moniz having his best all-around game since taking over, and Greg Salas ripping up the Aggies for 187 yards and two scores. The momentum should continue against New Mexico State and San Jose State, and if Hawaii can get to 5-6, all of a sudden, things get interesting with home games against Navy and Wisconsin to finish up.

Idaho
… Fresno State 31 ... at Idaho 21 ... With Nathan Enderle out with a rotator cuff problem, Brian Reader filled in and wasn’t bad. However, the defense couldn’t keep Fresno State RB Ryan Mathews under wraps and the pass defense couldn’t come up with a play getting tagged for a 14-of-14 Ryan Colburn day. While this wasn’t a great performance, and WAC title hopes are gone, the program can become a big player in the WAC with a win at Boise State next week. To come close, the pass defense has to be much, much better in a big hurry or Kellen Moore will go ballistic.

Louisiana Tech
… Boise State 45 ... at Louisiana Tech 35 ... It’s all about style points for a Boise State team trying to get past TCU in the BCS rankings, and while the final score might not be pretty, this was a more impressive performance than it might seem. Not only did everything on offense work, with receivers Austin Pettis and Titus Young each going over 100 yards and Jeremy Avery running for 146, but it was a timely attack. The defense seemed to take its foot off the gas, but when the Broncos needed to score late, they did. Next up is a dangerous game against an Idaho team looking to make an in-state statement.

Nevada
… Nevada 62 ... at San Jose State 7 ... Nevada is unstoppable right now. San Jose State isn’t playing well, and the defense didn’t have a chance against the well-oiled machine, but the Pack took its running game to another level with four 100-yard runners. 11-of-12 third down conversions, 8.8 yards per carry, and 665 yards of total offense; everything worked. On a six-game winning streak, it’s Fresno State up next in the home finale, but all eyes will be on the Boise State game coming in three weeks.

New Mexico State … Didn’t Play This Week

San Jose State
… Nevada 62... at San Jose State 7 ... The Spartan defense is going from bad to worse, but that’s because the competition has stepped up. Over the last two games, SJSU has lost to Boise State and Nevada by a combined score of 107 to 14, and Utah State is up next. While that might seem like a breather, the Aggies can run the ball extremely well and should gouge the Spartan front seven. Jordan LaSecla has to get the passing going in a hurry or there will be problems getting another win.

Utah State
… at Hawai‘i 49 ... Utah State 36 ... Hawaii hasn’t stopped anyone’s running game, and Utah State had to get out of its game, gaining just 102 yards, after getting down so fast. This isn’t a passing team, and although Diondre Borel threw for 344 yards, the defense couldn’t help out the cause with a stop when things got interesting. For all the positives, the team is still 2-7 with Boise State and Idaho still to deal with. If Utah State doesn’t beat San Jose State at home, it’s probably going to be a 2-10 season.
