Collegefootballnews' Matthew Smith Reviews all the Pac-10 Games, Week Nine

Oregon: This was the biggest win Oregon has had in a very long time.

Cal: The good news was they won. The bad news was how they played.
Oregon St: They had more issues than they'd like, but it's still a win.
Washington St: About what was expected.
UCLA: Losing wasn't good, but there were things to build on in the game.

Arizona St: They really could have used a win here, instead they blew it.
USC: The dynasty is over, now they need to pick up the pieces.

@ Oregon 47, USC (-3) 20
my pick: USC 28, @ Oregon 21

What to take from this:
If you're USC:

The run is over. It's that simple. That said, this is still an extremely good team, and they probably won't lose again, including a BCS at-large bowl game.

If you're Oregon:
After knocking off the Trojans in dominating fashion, the ceiling has officially been removed from this team. There are a boatload of undefeated teams, so a national title berth is a reach, but this should be a Rose Bowl team. There's plenty of work left to do, but barring an epic collapse this will be a season to remember for a long time.

Cal (-6.5) 23, @ Arizona St 21
my pick: Cal 24, @ Arizona St 21

What to take from this:
If you're Cal:

The Bears got to six wins, and just in time, with a nasty closing stretch coming up. Arizona, Oregon St and at Stanford will all be nasty challenges for this team, and if they don't start playing a lot better, especially on defense, they'll lose at least once, and possibly twice, before the regular season is over.

If you're Arizona St:
They needed this game, and they couldn't get it done. Erickson made a questionable call punting on 4th and 1 instead of running the ball to put the game away against a very vulnerable Cal defense, but it wasn't crazy to want to put the game in the hands of his defense, which has played well all year. What really killed them was the same old, same old. Too many mistakes, at too many bad times. Too many penalties, too many turnovers cost them this game, and most likely a bowl berth.

@ Oregon St (-9) 26, UCLA 19
my pick: @ Oregon St 28, UCLA 13

What to take from this:
If you're UCLA:

There's something to be said for continuing to fight and almost pulling it off. Yes, they're still not a good team, but that's the sort of effort that they can build on with a vital three games coming up. As vulnerable as they are, you can't count out this team yet.

If you're Oregon St:
Meh. It's worrying that they let UCLA back into the game, but ultimately it doesn't really matter. They were the better team and they won the game. Now they face Cal in a game that will largely determine whether they'll end up in a good bowl game or just a mediocre one.

Notre Dame 40, Washington St (+27.5) 14
my pick: Notre Dame 31, Washington St 13

What to take from this:
They just aren't good enough to hang with a decent team like Notre Dame. This isn't much of a surprise.

my pick: Ole Miss 27, @ Auburn 17

Bad Lines

Apparently my NC St +10 pick got deleted from the column, so I won't count that even though it was a winner. Figures that in a 2-5 week it'd be one of the wins that gets bounced. Oh well.
