GAME OF THE WEEK
Stanford 55 … at USC 21
Stanford stunned USC with 469 yards of total offense and with timely scores to stay ahead. The Cardinal got up 14-0 with an Andrew Luck four-yard touchdown pass to Owen Marecic and a one-yard Toby Gerhart run, and then answered every score with a score. USC traded scores with Allen Bradford and Joe McKnight rushing for scores and Brice Butler catching a 36-yard touchdown pass, but Matt Barkley was picked off by Richard Sherman for a 42-yard score, Luck threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Coby Fleener and ran for another score, and Gerhart finished with three rushing touchdowns. Stanford scored 27 unanswered points with all coming in the fourth quarter. The 55 points were the most ever allowed by a USC team.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Stanford RB Toby Gerhart ran 29 times for 178 yards and three touchdowns, and he caught a pass for nine yards in the win over USC.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Arizona … at California 24 ... Arizona 16 ... Uh oh. Arizona controlled its own Rose Bowl destiny, but the tough part of the schedule is kicking in and the team failed its first test with Oregon, at Arizona State, and at USC left to play. Cal’s defense doesn’t stop anyone, but the Wildcats were only able to manage 274 yards of total offense. Even so, the defense did a decent job of keeping the Jahvid Best-lest Bears under wraps. The offense needs to ramp up the firepower in a hurry to keep up with Oregon next week, or else the Cats will fall further and further down the bowl pecking order.
Arizona State … at Oregon 44 ... Arizona State 21 ... The Sun Devils are in trouble after losing four straight to all but get knocked out of the bowl hunt. Now the team needs to beat both UCLA at UCLA and Arizona, and while the defense is good enough to do it, the offense needs to be more consistent. The insertion of Samson Szakacsy at quarterback provided a spark and some life, but the Bruins will get a week to prepare for him; Oregon didn’t do that. On the plus side, the D held the high-powered Ducks to 388 yards, but in a game like this, 211 yards of offense and nine penalties were going to be a killer.
California … at California 24 ... Arizona 16 ... This was a tremendous gut-check win for the Bears. Without Jahvid Best, Shane Vereen picked up the slack and the defense did a fantastic job against the high-powered Wildcat attack. The secondary that has been picked clean all season long gave up a mere 201 yards to Nick Foles, and that’s a tremendous sign going into the big game against Stanford. However, the D isn’t good enough to shut down the high-powered Cardinal, so it’ll be up to Kevin Riley to pick his game up a few notches and do a better job in the red zone after the O settled for too many field goals.
Oregon … at Oregon 44 ... Arizona State 21
... Oregon’s offense wasn’t the juggernaut it was in past weeks, but ASU has one of the Pac 10’s better defense. Even with a second half run by the Sun Devils, the Ducks were in control thanks to the ground game and a few timely passes from Jeremiah Masoli, but the offense struggled on third downs and didn’t control the clock, holding on to the ball for 23:35. The Ducks control their own destiny needing to beat Arizona and Oregon State to win the Pac 10 title, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing if Stanford lost to Cal or if the Beavers were to lose next week to Washington State (ha!).
Oregon State … Oregon State 48 ... at Washington 21 ... Arizona is going to lose again, meaning the Beavers realistically control their own destiny for the Rose Bowl, needing to beat Washington State next week (no problem there) before the showdown against Oregon. The Beavers blew the shot at the Rose Bowl last year in the Civil War, but this year’s team appears to be far better equipped and far more mature. After struggling with the pass rush this year, the Beavers were great at getting to Jake Locker this week. Offensively, Sean Canfield is playing as well as any quarterback in the Pac 10, and it helps to get big game after big game out of Jacquizz Rodgers to provide a star to revolve around.
Stanford … Stanford 55 ... at USC 21 ... It’s saying too much to call this the biggest win in the history of Stanford football, Jim Plunkett might have something to say about the debate, but it might have been the most impressive. This wasn’t a win; this was a total and complete domination of USC in its own house. Fine, so this might not be a juggernaut of a Trojan team, but Stanford just scored more points in one game than any team ever has against USC. It will be a fight, but the Rose Bowl is still in the picture needing to beat Cal and get a little luck.
UCLA … UCLA 43 ... at Washington State 7 ... The Bruins were able to keep bowl hopes alive with the blowout win, and it showed that yes, the team really can blow out the bad teams and the offense really does work. Now the Bruins need to beat Arizona State or USC to get a 13th games, which would be a major accomplishment considering the rocky five-game losing stretch. The play of QB Kevin Lopina, and the strong D, helped this week by Akeem Ayers, who made four tackles, two sacks, and two interceptions, is coming through. But that was against Washington State. It’s going to take some work to win one of the last two.
USC … Stanford 55 ... at USC 21 ... What happened to the defense? After getting gouged by Oregon a few weeks ago, and ripped up late by Notre Dame’s passing game, the USC D is getting shoved all over the place. The Trojans gave up 325 rushing yards to Stanford and almost never came up with a key stop. Andrew Luck and the passing game kept the chains moving, while Toby Gerhart powered his way over the USC front seven. On the plus side, Matt Barkley wasn’t bad, outside of his three interceptions, and Joe McKnight ran well, but the defense couldn’t get off the field and the offense couldn’t keep pace. But there’s still hope to finish strong and have a great season. It might not be the BCS, but beating UCLA and Arizona might mean the Holiday Bowl. A ten-win season is still possible.
Washington … Oregon State 48 ... at Washington 21 ... The Huskies are getting worse as the season is going on, and they weren’t even close in the loss to the Beavers. On a four game losing streak, and losing six of the last seven games, the team desperately needs the upcoming Apple Cup layup against Washington State to make everyone feel good again. The pass protection was non-existent this week with Jake Locker not getting any room to breathe, while the defense continues to struggle against efficient passers. Fortunately, that won’t be a problem the rest of the way, but after such a good start in what seems like years ago, the team has to do something positive to build on for next year.
Washington State … UCLA 43 ... at Washington State 7 ... Alright, so Marshall Lobbestael isn’t the answer. The interceptions on the first three possessions all but knocked the Cougars out of the UCLA game before is started, but he was hardly the only problem. The defense is now the worst in America, and it’s getting worse instead of better. There’s no pass rush, while offensively, the line isn’t doing anything to protect the passers. There’s no offense, there’s no defense, and the special teams are mediocre. Nothing is working, and there are only two games left, with Oregon State coming up next, to try to improve to have something to build on for the offseason.
