Week 14, Rankings, No. 26 to 120

1. Alabama 13-0
Last Week: W, Florida 32-13
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Don’t forget how shaky the Tide was against Auburn. But after dominating Florida in a breathtaking performance, and with Texas struggling, there’s no other choice for the top spot.

2. Texas 13-0
Last Week: W, Nebraska 13-12
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: We might actually pick Texas to win the whole thing. Lost in the close call to Nebraska was a brilliant performance by the defense that allowed a mere 106 yards. Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: There but for the grace of a half a second goes the dream season. Nebraska’s defense is really, really good, but if Texas couldn’t crank out any offense in the Big 12 Championship, could it produce against Florida’s D? How about TCU’s?

3. Florida 12-1
Last Week: L, Alabama 32-13
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Let’s not get too carried away and too reactionary. If Alabama is the No. 1 team in America, then the Gators might still be No. 2. Chalk that loss up to a bad, bad, bad day. Florida is better than that, and it’ll show it in the bowls.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: There was only one win over a team that’s currently ranked in the Coaches Poll (LSU). For all the high-priced, superstar talent across the board, the team completely tanked with everything on the line.

4. TCU 12-0
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: If Utah could do that to Alabama last year, imagine how much TCU would like a shot at the big-time this time around.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: It would be nice to see the offense go against a top-notch defense. Utah’s D is fine, but it’s not special. As good as the defense has been, ranked No. 1 in the nation, it’s not like the Mountain West is full of world-beaters. The wins over Virginia and Clemson are ancient.

5. Oregon 10-2
Last Week: W, Oregon State 37-33
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: With LeGarrette Blount back in the mix, combining with Jeremiah Masoli and LaMichael James, good luck stopping the ground attack. Oregon should be able to rumble over Ohio State, even though the Buckeye front seven is fantastic, but ...
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: … the defense can be ripped up. The overall stats are nice, but as Stanford, Arizona, and Oregon State showed over the last few weeks, the Ducks will give up points.

6. Ohio State 10-2
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Flip a coin on whether or not Ohio State can win the Rose Bowl. The defense really is good enough to slow down the Ducks, while the offense should be able to come up with a few wrinkles with the time off. Oregon might be overconfident.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Oregon is a bad matchup for Ohio State. Unless the offense is better, and unless the defensive front dominates early on, this might not be a pretty Rose Bowl.

7. Cincinnati 12-0
Last Week: W, at Pitt 45-44
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The team showed the hearts and the guts to come back and pull out the win over Pitt to get into the BCS. The offense really is impressive with Tony Pike as tough a quarterback as they come, and Mardy Gilyard a legitimate superstar.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Cincinnati was fantastic, but Pitt choked. It took a special set of circumstances for the Bearcats to even be in a position to pull that out. Give credit for getting the job done, but that’s too close a call against a good, but not elite team.

8. Boise State 13-0
Last Week: W, New Mexico State 42-7
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: There’s still the question of how Boise State could be ranked lower than Oregon. The thought is that the Ducks are humming at a higher level now, but still, the Broncos did prove it on the field and has the better record.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Win the bowl game and then it’ll be time to talk about a top five ranking. The competition has been too weak to be all that impressed, even with the opening day win over the Ducks.

9. Penn State 10-2
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: This is a strong, veteran team that might fly under the radar this bowl season. The defense hasn’t played too many great teams, but with rest and time, it should be tremendous in January.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Iowa beat Penn State. That will get readjusted in the final rankings if the two teams finish with the same record.

10. Oregon State 8-4
Last Week: L, at Oregon 37-33
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Beavers went into Autzen Stadium and went toe-to-toe with the Ducks. If Oregon really is a top five caliber team, then Oregon State shouldn’t be punished.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: It really shouldn’t be. This is high for an 8-4 team, but the three losses came to Cincinnati and Arizona back in September, at USC by six and last week to Oregon. The Beavers are really good and should show it in the bowls.

11. Georgia Tech 11-2
Last Week: W, Clemson 39-34
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Talk about heart. The defense wasn’t playing well (at least against C.J. Spiller), but the offense was able to come up the ACC-winning drive by mixing up the running game just enough to get the win. The running attack is phenomenal.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The defense just isn’t that good. Was the loss to Georgia a few weeks ago a case of looking ahead to the title game, or did it expose the Yellow Jackets for not being all that great?

12. Virginia Tech 9-3
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Keep an eye out for the Hokies this bowl season. With time to rest up, the defense should be fantastic while the running game could be one of the big stories of the bowls. Ryan Williams should be a star of the post-season.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: There isn’t a good win on the schedule since a mid-October victory over Boston College. Would you take the Hokies over the Clemson team that showed up in the ACC title game?

13. Pitt 9-3
Last Week: L, Cincinnati 45-44
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: If you believe that Cincinnati is a special team, then Pitt shouldn’t be ranked too much further behind. There’s no reason to drop the Panthers after that loss.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Coffee’s for closers only. Pitt has come up with some tight wins, but in the really, really big games under Dave Wannstedt, it tends to find ways to blow it. A good bowl performance is a must.

14. LSU 9-3
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Do you want to face LSU this bowl season? Remember what the Tigers did last year against Georgia Tech with time to prepare. This is a top five team on athleticism and speed.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The lines, the lines, the lines. It’s an every week complaint, but the Tigers will have to prove themselves up front this bowl season. There’s no running game to worry about.

15. Iowa 10-2
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: Yes, technically, Iowa should be ahead of Penn State. This should all come out in the wash in the final rankings. The defense should be able to overcome a mediocre offense, while James Vanderberg will have time to get more reps in and be ready.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Ricky Stanzi might be ready to be back, but if he is, he’ll be very, very rusty. Flip a coin on whether or not the Iowa offense will be decent or stagnant.

16. Clemson 8-5
Last Week: L, Georgia Tech 39-34
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: There’s no reason to drop the Tigers too much after the fantastic game against the Yellow Jackets. With C.J. Spiller, Clemson can put up numbers on anyone. Anyone except …
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: … a bad South Carolina team. The Tigers had bigger fish to fry, but the loss to the Gamecocks still doesn’t look pretty a few weeks after the fact. Clemson might be playing well, but it still has five losses with a gack against Maryland on the résumé.

17. North Carolina 8-4
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The defense should be one of the stars of the bowl season. This group should be frothing at the mouth after the loss to NC State.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The loss to NC State … the loss to NC State … the loss to NC State. The offense has been a nightmare at times and needs to show something in the bowl if the defense isn’t a brick wall.

18. Miami 9-3
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Hurricanes had to deal with a jacked up South Florida team looking to make a huge statement, and they won in a walk. When this team plays up to its talent level and potential, it can beat anyone in the country.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: This is a maddening team. The athletes are there, the talent is in place, and when everything is clicking, look out. 9-3 isn’t a bad record, but the Canes should be playing in the ACC title game. They don’t show up week to week.

19. Nebraska 9-4
Last Week: L, Texas 13-12
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The defense. Yeeeeeeeeesh.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The offense. Yeeeeeeeeesh.

20. Ole Miss 8-4
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The win over LSU still should carry some weight. When the team is at its best, it can play with anyone in the country and can blow away teams like Tennessee.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Mississippi State 41, Ole Miss 27. You don’t.

21. Arizona 8-4
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: The Wildcats have figured out how to win. There are some rough losses on the books, but they outlasted Arizona State in a tough rivalry game and then showed great mettle to come back to beat USC.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: This is the team that can play with anyone in the Pac 10 or lose to anyone, outside of Washington State. While the Cats deserve credit for pulling off some big late wins, they were also extremely close to being in trouble just to get to a bowl.

22. Arkansas 7-5
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: This is too low for a team whose biggest crime was losing to the four best teams in the SEC. The offense could bomb its way past about 100 teams and appears to be hitting its stride now.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: There’s still a question mark about the defense while the offense has become way too one-dimensional. But that’s nitpicking. This probably should be a top 15 team and it might prove it against East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl.

23. California 8-4
Last Week: L, at Washington 42-10
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: It can’t be. Not after that loss to Washington. The Bears are here mostly because of the strong win over Stanford, but they haven’t quite been the world-beaters expected.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: The defense has been awful against the better quarterbacks and got destroyed by Jake Locker. This is a bit of a gift to be this high.

24. Stanford 8-4 Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: When everything was clicking with the offense the Cardinal was as good as anyone. The win over USC is still impressive, even though the Trojans went into the tank. However ....
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Is QB Andrew Luck hurt> He has a finger injury and is questionable for the Sun Bowl. If he’s out this is a whole different team.

25. Oklahoma State 9-3
Last Week: Didn’t Play This Week
Why The Ranking Should Be Higher: If everyone is healthy, or if several of the key parts are healthier, this could be a dangerous bowl team with a lot to prove after an underwhelming season. Struggling at Oklahoma, even this Oklahoma team, isn’t a crime.
Why The Ranking Should Be Lower: Can’t … get …the OU … game … out of … head. That was a bad performance. A really, really bad performance with everything on the line.
