Former Vol David Cutcliffe Reported Headed Back To UT.

By: BE Coleman

Conflicting media reports from Greensboro and Chapel Hill NC have all named David Cutcliffe as the 22nd head coach at Tennessee.

WFMY-TV in Greensboro and WCHY in Chapel Hill are reporting that Duke head football coach David Cutcliffe will be the new head coach at Tennessee.

UT AD Mike Hamilton scheduled a meeting with Cutcliffe today, but details of his possible announcement are sketchy and no official deal has been announced.

The university has not confirmed his hiring, but news reports from Durham and in Greensboro have said Cutcliffe has agreed in principle to take over for Lane Kiffin immediately, while TV stations in Greensboro, NC are confirming the breaking news that find the longtime, loyal Volunteer assistant coach will be the next head coach.

But reports inside Knoxville are conflicting. Brent Hubbs from Volquest is saying that he spoke with Cutcliffe personally and says Cutcliffe says he has not accepted the job.

If he is the named man for the job, it will be yet another shock after the initial quake set off by a one and done Kiffin.

Cutcliffe last coached at Tennessee in 2006-07 as the offensive coordinator to help his longtime boss Phillip Fulmer resurrect the Vols downhill slide.

He left in December of '07 to become the Blue Devils head coach, taking one of the worst programs in America back into national headlines.

In 2003, while at Ole Miss he was named the SEC Coach of the year. He took over the defunct Rebel program in 1999 after guiding the Vols offense to an undefeated 12-0 season in 98.
