CFN Recruiting Rankings
120. Eastern Michigan
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 119
Things can’t be any worse. Thanks to a miserable season with no positives to build on, the team is all but starting over in Ron English’s second season. The Eagles have to find something they can do well on offense, and there’s a chance for more production with seven starters returning including quarterback Alex Gillett,
who's the main man now that Kyle McMahon has
transferred . The defense might not be night-and-day better, but with eight starters back there’s hope for more consistency.
119. Western Kentucky
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 120
There’s nowhere to go but up, but new head coach Will Taggart will give it a try. He’s an offensive coach who should be good at jumpstarting an attack that had little to no explosion and struggled to put up points. It’s not like the offense was awful when it came to scoring, even though it finished 104th in the nation in scoring offense, but there was only one game with more than 24 points. That should change in 2010.
118. New Mexico State
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 112
DeWayne Walker’s team really did show a little bit of improvement even if the record didn’t show it, and now he has a team loaded with veterans that should be able to win a few games. Seven starters are back on offense and most of the defensive front and secondary return, but the linebacking corps has to be replaced. There isn’t a sure-thing win anywhere with the Utah State game on the road and no cream-puff non-conference game. The easiest game outside of the WAC is against New Mexico.
117. Miami University
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 114
For good or bad, almost everyone is back on both sides of the ball and if the team can show more fight, there could be a four-game turnaround If the experience counts as something. Coming up with a running game would be nice, but the key will be to get more out of the line play. If the offensive line isn’t better, and it gets the entire two-deep back, then the production won’t follow.
116. Ball State
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 116
Things can’t be any worse for Stan Parrish, and they won’t be. The lumps taken with all the turnover last year should pay off a wee bit with more experience this year. Considering there were so many close losses, the veteran team should be able to handle itself better in tough situations. This isn’t going to be a good enough team to contend for anything, but a winning season isn’t out of the picture if the offense can grow up in a hurry.
115. Rice
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 118
After using a gaggle of unproven players in 2009, Rice ought to start reaping some of the benefits next fall. Both lines return intact and QB Nick Fanuzzi flashed upside once he got healthy and was able to develop a rhythm playing in consecutive games. Although this program is clearly built on the offense, head coach David Bailiff needs to find some answers on defense, or else the Owls will be forever trying to survive in shootouts.
114. FIU
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 105
It’s close to win-or-bust time for Cristobal. The Golden Panthers have to at least look like their getting closer to being a player in the Sun Belt race, but the improvement will have to be done with a slew of young players. With Sun Belt road games at Troy and FAU to go along with non-conference dates against Rutgers, Texas A&M, and Pitt, it’s going to take something special to come up with a winning season.
113. North Texas
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 110
The Todd Dodge era likely gets one more chance to see what it can do. There’s enough returning talent to be among the sleepers to make a huge turnaround and be a factor in the Sun Belt race from the start. The defense hasn’t been even mediocre in years and has to be a bit better to give the potentially high-octane offense a wee bit of help. This should be a balanced attack led by Riley Dodge, a young quarterback who’s on the verge of being a special playmaker.
112. Akron
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 102
New head coach Rob Ianello was a nice get. The former Notre Dame assistant under Charlie Weis, and the interim head man for about ten minutes, he should provide a nice jumpstart to an offense that’s still promising even with the loss of a few key players and after a horrible season like 2009. The defense gets back enough players to be among the best in the MAC with a little bit of tweaking and a lot more pass rush.
111. New Mexico
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 117
2009 couldn’t have been any more of a disaster, and there’s no way 2010 could be worse … after a rough start. The Lobos have to start out at Oregon and face Texas Tech, and they have to go on the road to face BYU and Air Force. On the plus side, they get TCU and Utah at home. The offense that was so hit-or-miss last year has to replace most of the line and QB Donovan Porterie, while the defense gets back tackling machine Carmen Messina and most of the front seven. Both safeties, Clint McPeek and Frankie Baca, are gone.
110. Tulane
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 111
Even if you squint real hard, it’s difficult to find the silver lining in the Tulane program going forward. The defense can’t cut it, the offense loses its two best playmakers, RB Andre Anderson and WR Jeremy Williams, and the staff has shown no signs of being able to turn things around. A lot of pressure will be on Ryan Griffin, who laid the groundwork for his future by throwing eight touchdown passes over the final four games.
109. Memphis
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 108
There are some in the administration who believe the football program can someday be where the basketball team currently resides. The man in charge of navigating those waters is Larry Porter, who brings a new energy to his alma mater. The 37-year old former LSU assistant is widely recognized as one of the nation’s premier recruiters, which Memphis needs to achieve its long-term goals. He inherits a team that’ll have a dearth of proven talent on offense and those nagging issues on defense.
108. Louisiana Tech
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 89
If nothing else, Sonny Dykes will make things interesting with a higher octane offense. Does he have the players to run his attack? The dark green offensive line of last year that started three freshmen come back fully intact, while the defensive back seven gets all the key parts back. The defensive front has to undergo a wholesale change, and a quarterback has to emerge who can wing it around like Dykes wants to if Ross Jenkins can’t handle the work. Three of the first four games are at home with a chance to make a statement against Navy and Southern Miss.
107. Army
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 104
Rich Ellerson might actually have Army in a bowl in his second year at the helm. The team isn’t going to be all that great even with a slew of veterans returning, but the schedule is nice and soft with only two games against BCS conference teams: Duke and Rutgers. If the Knights are any good, they have to beat Eastern Michigan, Hawaii, North Texas, Tulane, VMI, and Kent State. That’s a bowl season. The offense gets back seven starters with a year of experience in the system, while the not-that-bad defense returns eight starters. This might just be the year Army finally beats Navy.
106. San Jose State
2009 Final CFN Ranking: 113
Mike MacIntyre is a strong head coaching prospect and a great get for the program. Unfortunately, the schedule isn’t going to allow for a bounceback season with road games against Alabama, Wisconsin, and Utah, but Boise State and Fresno State have to come to San Jose. McIntryre will try to jump-start the offense, and he gets back a group loaded with veterans and needs Jordan La Secla to be a steady quarterback right away. The young secondary of last year should be far better, but the defensive front needs work.
