Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips announced that safety Matt Lentz has decided to give up his playing career due to concussions and that a Monday examination has revealed defensive end DeQuin Evans incurred a mild knee sprain on Saturday.

Lentz, a Simpsonville, SC native came to UK in 2007 as a quarterback and had redshirted that season. He was moved to safety in the spring of 2008, where he played in 25 games during the last two years, including six starting assignments.

Lentz totaled 46 tackles, two interceptions and two pass breakups. He had a career-high seven tackles in the 2008 win over Arkansas and his interceptions came in Wildcat victories in 2008 at Louisville and 2009 vs. the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Phillips noted that Lentz will apply to remain on scholarship because of medical hardship. The junior can graduate in the summer or fall of 2010 with a degree in management.

Evans, the team's top returning defensive lineman brought deep concern. "He'll be ready to go in about three or four days," noted Phillips. "He got lucky, he got rolled up on, but rolled out of it, so he'll be fine.

An area of emphasis this spring has been in the offensive line, where four starters must be replaced from last season.

The coach also gave an update on the competition between quarterbacks Mike Hartline, Morgan Newton and Ryan Mossakowski.

"All of them did some good, we're progressing the right way," Phillips said. "The ball has to come out of our hands a little bit better but the thing is, they're throwing the ball where it is supposed to be. All I want to do is see if they are throwing the ball to the right spot. We'll get it coming out of their hands better later."
