GAME OF THE WEEK
Utah State 52 … at Idaho 49
In a wild shootout with 1,069 yards of total offense, Robert Turbin ran for three touchdowns and took passes 48 and 22 yards for scores, but Idaho battled. Down 31-7, the Vandals scored 28 straight points on three Nathan Enderle touchdown passes, with two to Max Komar, and a 17-yard Princeton McCarty run, but the Aggies bounced back with a 21-point fourth quarter highlighted by a 75-yard Stanley Morrison touchdown catch. Idaho pulled within three in the final moments on a ten-yard Daniel Hardy catch, but Utah State recovered an onside kick.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Utah State RB Robert Turbin ran 24 times for 113 yards and three touchdowns, and caught two passes for 70 yards and two scores in the win over Idaho.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Boise State … at Boise State 44 ... Nevada
33 ... Kellen Moore is unflappable. Under the solid Nevada pass rush and all the pressure, he kept making smart play after smart play and did a great job of getting rid of the ball rather than take too many chances. Most importantly against the Wolf Pack, the defense was able to hold its own. It gave up one huge touchdown run, but for the most part it kept Colin Kaepernick under wraps. Every time the Broncos were seriously challenged, they came up with the score they needed. But was this enough to impress the BCSers? It should be.
Fresno State … Didn’t Play This Week
Hawaii … at Hawai‘i 24 ... Navy 17 ... Can Hawaii really get to a bowl game? 2-6 with the season going nowhere, the Warriors took advantage of the easy part of the slate beating awful Utah State, NMSU, and San Jose State teams. But beating Navy is a strong, confidence-boosting moment that gives the team something to play for. As if beating Wisconsin wouldn’t be enough, Hawaii would get a 14th game, the Hawaii Bowl with a win. The return of Bryant Moniz from a rib injury was a big boost to the attack, but the win over Navy came from the defense that kept the Midshipmen ground game under wraps. However, handling the power game of the Badgers will be a whole different animal.
Idaho … Utah State 52 ... at Idaho 49 ... Talk about limping into the bowls, the Vandals lost four of their final five games. However, the offense was humming against Utah State in comeback mode, and it almost was enough to overcome a miserable day by the defense to get the win. Nathan Enderle has to heal up for the bowl; the offense is far better and far more efficient when he’s in. But if the defense is going to continue to struggle, it’s going to be an ugly 13th game. However, Idaho is going to a bowl game … everything else is gravy.
Louisiana Tech … Didn’t Play This Week
Nevada
…at Boise State 44 ... Nevada 33 ... Boise State created the blueprint on how to slow down the Nevada offense, but it took a team this good to do it. The Broncos were able to get into the backfield on a regular basis and got to QB Colin Kaepernick before he could get the offense started. But even though the Broncos got up big early, the Pack kept fighting back and almost got within range of making things really interesting before Vai Taua lost a critical fumble. The loss might have been disappointing, but the team did a good job against a Bronco squad that belongs in the BCS. Oregon only wishes it could’ve played this well on the blue turf.
New Mexico State … at San Jose State 13 ... New Mexico State 10 ... 51 yards passing? Averaging 91 per game? For a team that was built to bomb away under Hal Mumme, there should be some pieces left in place to move the ball through the air, and this late in the season, there should be some improvement. It hasn’t happened as the team and the offense are getting worse and worse. The Aggies haven’t scored more than 20 points against an FBS team, and they might need just a wee bit more than 20 to have a chance against Boise State … in the first quarter.
San Jose State … at San Jose State 13 ... New Mexico State 10 ... Jordan LaSecla came off the bench and was fine, and the team got the win in the home finale, but yuck. The defense saved the day against a miserable New Mexico State, but the offense hasn’t come up with more than one touchdown in any of the last five games. The defense that has been so miserable throughout the season, ranking second-to-last in rushing, will have to come up with its tightest game yet to have any shot at Louisiana Tech, but the offense will have to get something out of the passing game, and LaSecla will have to be excellent to make it interesting.
Utah State… Utah State 52 ... at Idaho 49 ... Get the hype machine rolling. Utah State might have only finished 4-8, and this isn’t going to be a WAC title contender next year, but with a backfield with Diondre Borel and Robert Turbin, this is going to be a fun team in 2010. The defense needs some major work after allowing 101 points in the last two games, not to mention the 49 given up to Hawaii four weeks ago, but the team was far more competitive and far more fun. Utah State is no longer the easy out it was under Brent Guy.
