GAME OF THE WEEK
at Louisiana-Lafayette 21 … ULM 17
ULL became bowl eligible as backup QB Brad McGuire ran for two one-yard scores and Yobes Walker ran for a one-yard touchdown in the first. ULM got a four-yard touchdown run and a 11-yard scoring pass from Trey Revell, but the offense couldn’t answer late after losing its lead. With the loss, ULM is out of the Sun Belt title hunt.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Troy QB Levi Brown completed 27-of-36 passes for 477 yards and three touchdowns with an interception in the win over Florida Atlantic.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Arkansas State … at Middle Tennessee 38 ... Arkansas State 14 ... Florida Atlantic is the Sun Belt’s most disappointing team, but ASU is No. 2. The lack of offensive punch has been a shock, and it all stems from a line that isn’t giving the skill players time to work. The Red Wolves aren’t better than MTSU, and they didn’t do much to give themselves a chance with 15 penalties and after getting down big early. This isn’t a team built for comebacks, and it’s not going to have to do much scrambling with lightweights North Texas and Western Kentucky to close out.
FIU … at Florida 62 ... FIU 3 ... FIU was never going to have a shot against Florida, and this might not have been much of a learning experience. Florida got up so big so fast that the Golden Panthers didn’t have a chance to make it interesting. In yet another losing season, Mario Cristobal has to come up with a big win at home over Florida Atlantic just to show that the potential is there for the program to go into the right direction. The secondary that has been torched all year needs to come up with its best game yet, and the offense has to score early to take the pressure off.
Florida Atlantic … at Troy 47 ... Florida
Atlantic 21 ... This might be a disappointing season for the Owls, getting worse with three losses in the final four games, but there’s still a shot to turn things around in the end and save face with Western Kentucky and FIU to close. The passing game keeps on producing, even with Jeff Van Camp under center in place of Rusty Smith, but the defense has been a disaster with no pass rush and the secondary getting destroyed. Fortunately, WKU won’t be able to take advantage next week. However, at 3-7, this is the league’s most disappointing team.
Middle Tennessee … at Middle Tennessee 38 ... Arkansas State 14 ... The Blue Raiders are still in the hunt to win a share of the Sun Belt title, but really, that doesn’t matter. More importantly, they’re going to go bowling after getting to the 8-3 mark and with ULM coming up. There’s still a chance for a ten-win season after stuffing Arkansas State in an easy win. The defense is forcing mistakes, Dwight Dasher has been special, and this has been the season Blue Raider fans have been waiting for.
North Texas… Army 17 ... and North Texas 13 ... Could there be any more devastating wins for the Mean Green? After a disastrous loss to FIU, UNT collapsed late against Army in a game it should’ve won. Five turnovers were devastating, and the lack of run defense once again reared its ugly head. To close out the home slate with a loss like this is going to be bitter going into the offseason, with the defense failing to come up with a stop on the final Knight drive, but there’s one final shot to get something positive with a battle against a dead Arkansas State team to close. The offense can’t keep giving the ball away, but there are signs of live with the league’s No. 1 rushing attack.
Troy … at Troy 47 ... Florida Atlantic 21
... The Trojans aren’t playing any pass defense and the turnover margin is a problem, but they’re going to win the Sun Belt title and they have a shot at a ten-win season. What’s interesting about this year’s team is that the defense that normally carries the way hasn’t shown up. The nation’s fourth best passing attack, and fourth best offense, has been destroying everyone in Sun Belt play, and it shouldn’t have a problem bombing away on Louisiana-Lafayette to close out the regular season.
UL Lafayette … at Louisiana-Lafayette 21 ... ULM 17 ... There aren’t going to be any open spots for three Sun Belt teams (Troy and Middle Tennessee will likely go bowling), but for Louisiana to get bowl eligible with a shot at being 7-5 is an impressive season in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. Chris Masson and Brad McGuire combined to get the job done against ULM, but the offense continues to struggle to score and the defensive front isn’t doing enough to get into the backfield. With no pass rush, keeping up with Troy is going to be a problem.
ULM … at Louisiana-Lafayette 21 ... ULM 17 ... ULM had a chance to make a big statement and stay in the hunt for part of the Sun Belt title, but the offense fizzled and the defense couldn’t come through even though the league-leading run defense came up with another great performance. While there might not be a bowl slot available for the Warhawks, getting a win over Middle Tennessee to close out with three wins in the final four games, and to finish 7-5, would make the season a success. It might not be a Sun Belt title season, but it would be a good campaign.
