GAME OF THE WEEK

at LSU 33 … Arkansas 30 OT
LSU capped off a brilliant last-gasp drive, answering a 14-yard Joe Adams touchdown catch with 1:18 to play, going 41 yards in 1:08 leading to a Josh Jasper 41-yard field goal to force overtime. In the OT, Jasper hit his fourth kick of the game, connecting from 36 yards out for a Tiger lead. Arkansas PK Alex Tejada missed a 36-yarder giving LSU the win. Jordan Jefferson threw two touchdown passes for the Tigers, highlighted by a 16-yarder to Brandon LaFell in the first, and Trindon Holliday returned a punt 87 yards for a score on the way to a 17-3 LSU lead, but Arkansas kept pace helped by touchdown runs from Ronnie Wingo from 13 yards out and Broderick Green from eight yards away.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tennessee RB Montario Hardesty ran 39 times for 179 yards and three scores and caught two passes for 11 yards in the win over Kentucky.

CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Alabama
… Alabama 26 ... at Auburn 21 ... Alabama showed it could come up big when it’s not playing its best. The running game was stuffed, with Mark Ingram only ran for 30 yards, but other players stepped up their games with Julio Jones making things happen on the final drive with four key catches, and Greg McElroy having his strongest performance of the season. Able to fully focus on Florida now, it’ll be interesting to see if the emotion and the energy are ramped up after the near miss. Nick Saban said his team didn’t have the fire, and it’ll need it, and then some, to get by the Gators.

Arkansas
… at LSU 33 ... Arkansas 30 OT ... Arkansas knows how to fight with the big boys on the road, but this is the second time this year there was a huge chance to make a statement and it didn’t happen. The first was against Florida, and like the LSU game, the defense couldn’t close. Jerry Franklin made 13 tackles, half a sack, and an interception, but the Hog D struggled against the LSU offense when it had to come up with a stop the most. While this will be disappointing for the bowl picture and the program’s momentum, the Hogs could still end up going to the Cotton.

Auburn
… Alabama 26 ... at Auburn 21 ... Auburn played its best defensive game of the season, while the offense pulled out every trick out of its bag. However, once Alabama adjusted, and the game settled down, the Auburn offense wasn’t able to come up with much else. The final minute-plus was awful, and the coaching staff that won the first 35 minutes, lost the last 25, and that was the difference. Even so, this was a nice performance over a possible national champion, but that doesn’t mean much of anything around Auburn. You either win the Iron Bowl or you lose it, and now Gene Chizik is 0-1.

Florida
… at Florida 37 ... Florida State 10 ... Florida toyed with the Seminoles. Tim Tebow was razor-sharp, coming up with one of his best games of the season as the Gators rolled up 545 yards of total offense helped by converting 10-of-13 third down chances. There were too many penalties, an extra point got blocked, and there were two fumbles for the coaching staff to harp on, but there weren’t any real problems and the team played focused and well going into the SEC Championship. The defense embarrassed the Noles until the outcome had been decided.

Georgia
… Georgia 30 ... at Georgia Tech 24 ... Georgia appeared to be playing loose and was bouncing around with good energy. It showed on both sides of the ball as Rennie Curran made 15 stops while the offense was tremendous on the ground without A.J. Green to keep the safeties away. After the Kentucky loss this was exactly what the program needed, and now it can improve its bowl positioning as a far more attractive team. With time off to rest and heal up, the Dawgs could be very dangerous in the post-season and could set the tone and the expectations high for what should be a bounceback 2010.

Kentucky
… Tennessee 30 ... at Kentucky 24 OT ... icah Johnson 16 tackles, but the defense couldn’t come up with enough game-changing plays, outside of the early pick six from Sam Maxwell, to overcome a mediocre day from the offense. The coaching staff once again got creative with Randall Cobb, but Morgan Newton and the passing game never got off the ground. UK blew a chance at being a lock for a New Year’s Day bowl game, but it’s still going to be in the mix for a good post-season game. The team should be a lot better with a few weeks to rest.

LSU
… at LSU 33 ... Arkansas 30 OT ... LSU isn’t playing all that great and has a ton of flaws, but it’s 9-3 and off to a big-time bowl, likely the Capital One. Jordan Jefferson overcame the lack of a running game by doing a nice job of completing the short to midrange passes, and he adjusted after the Ole Miss debacle with a far more efficient last gasp drive to set up the overtime-causing field goal. Even though this might not be the best team under Les Miles, it’s two games better going into the bowls than last year’s team. The Ole Miss game aside, the team manages to keep its head and pull out wins.

Ole Miss … at Mississippi State 41 ... Ole Miss 27 ...  The team’s disappointing season was about to look a whole lot better. With an apparent layup against Mississippi State, Ole Miss would’ve been 9-3 with a chance at an impressive ten-win season, even if there wasn’t an SEC title attached to it. But now, all the same problems from the first part of the year are back. Jevan Snead struggled with his consistency and his interceptions, the running game sputtered, and the defense inconceivably had major lapses. This might not have cost the Rebels a New Year’s Day bowl, but it might be the Cotton instead of the Capital One.

Miss State … at Mississippi State 41 ... Ole Miss 27 ... For a first-year coaching staff at a program that has traditionally had to battle to be out of the conference basement, getting an Egg Bowl win means everything. Going 5-7 isn’t what Dan Mullen was hoping for, especially considering how close the Bulldogs were to beating LSU and Houston, but all anyone is going to talk about or care about in Starkville this offseason is how the program might be on the rise thanks to this one win. The running game worked, the defense forced mistakes, and this is as good, if not better than winning a bowl game.

South Carolina … at South Carolina 34 .... Clemson 17 ... S-E-C … S-E-C. That was the South Carolina chant after the defense came up with a brilliant effort and the team overcame a three-game losing streak and a rough run of four losses in five games. The running game came up with one of its better games of the season, and while Stephen Garcia wasn’t always on, he did enough to keep the chains moving. This was the type of with that will make everyone love Steve Spurrier again, and it’ll set the expectations high for the bowl game and for next year.

Tennessee
… Tennessee 30 ... at Kentucky 24 OT ... Tennessee might not have always been consistent, but it finished the season with four wins in the final five games and upped its bowl stock big-time by getting by a solid Kentucky team. Rico McCoy 13 tackles and the defense did a terrific job late, while the offense was almost perfectly balanced. Montario Hardesty has helped carry the offense over the final few weeks, running 32 times against Vandy and 39 against Kentucky. For future UT running backs, it’s time to get excited; the coaching staff will use you when you produce.

Vanderbilt
