GAME OF THE WEEK

Arizona 20 … at Arizona State 17
Arizona State’s Kyle Williams had a tremendous day, catching nine passes for 130 yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns from 44 and 14 yards out to tie the game at 17, but with a chance to give his offense the ball back with a chance to win, he muffed a punt, Arizona recovered, and Alex Zendejas won the game on a 32-yard field goal with no time left on the clock. The Wildcats held a 14-0 first half lead on a 67-yard Keola Antolin run and a 23-yard blocked punt for a score from Orlando Vargas, but Williams and the Sun Devils came back and appeared to at least have overtime with a chance for the win before the special teams snafu.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Stanford RB Toby Gerhart ran 29 times for 205 yards and three scores and he threw an 18-yard touchdown in the win over Notre Dame..

CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Arizona
… Arizona 20 ... at Arizona State 17 ... And now the Wildcats can exhale. They didn’t want to have to beat USC to go to a bowl, and a loss to ASU would’ve meant a likely four-game losing streak to close out the season, a loss to the archrival, and no bowl game. That wouldn’t have been a plus for a team that had Rose Bowl dreams a few weeks ago. The offensive firepower magically starts to sputter on the road against good defenses, but it’ll be interesting to see if Nick Foles and the passing game can open it up again against the Trojans. USC is beatable, but the Wildcats have to be more efficient than they were against the Sun Devils.

Arizona State
… Arizona 20 ... at Arizona State 17 ... ASU wasted a brilliant season from the defense with not enough offensive punch, but Kyle Williams carried the attack and Danny Sullivan had a nice performance in his last chance. With a six-game losing streak to close things out, and with four losses that could’ve gone ASU’s way, this was a waste. Penalties, with ten against Arizona, were a problem, and the brain-cramp by Williams will be remembered, but this was a team loss. Considering the Sun Devils finished first in the Pac 10 in D, and the foundation is set, this could be a bounceback team next year with a little more pop.

California
… Didn’t Play This Week

Oregon
… Didn’t Play This Week

Oregon State
… Didn’t Play This Week

Stanford
… at Stanford 45 ... Notre Dame 38 ... At 8-4, Stanford closed out the season with a wild bang with Toby Gerhart all but sewing up a Heisman finalist slot in the fun shootout. The defense continues to have issues getting into the backfield on a regular basis, but it held the Irish to just one score over the final 27 minutes. Offensively, Andrew Luck bounced back from the Cal game with a nice performance without any big mistakes. Can the Cardinal hang on to Jim Harbaugh now? It’s going to be tougher after yet another big win.

UCLA
… at USC 28 ... UCLA 7 ... Can UCLA get to a bowl because of a nice name? The defense did a good job against the Trojans but the offense couldn’t get anything consistently moving, hurt by the loss of QB Kevin Prince to an aggravated sprained shoulder and the lack of a running game. UCLA needed to win the turnover battle and was -3. The offense didn’t have any punch to make up for the mistakes, and now the team might have to sit and stew all offseason on the rough way the regular season ended. Rick Neuheisel’s stated goal is to beat USC and to be the premier program in town, and the final minute didn’t help the cause.

USC
… at USC 28 ... UCLA 7... With the win, and with a date with Arizona next week, USC is still on pace for a ten-win season, but the victory total might mask the problems. The defense came up with a tremendous game after dealing with the 55-21 loss to Stanford over the last two weeks, but the offense still can’t seem to find its groove. Matt Barkley wasn’t bad, but he didn’t do enough to move the chains, while the running game couldn’t take control. The emotion of Senior Day might need to carry the team past the high-powered Wildcats if Barkley can’t come up with more firepower and more deep plays.

Washington
… at Washington 30 ... Washington State 0 ... After all the issues and the bad streak of six losses in seven games, the Huskies have a shot to finish 5-7 with wins over USC and Washington State; that’s not a bad season. Jake Locker and the offense were fine, and the offensive line did a great job, but the win over the Cougars was all about the defense and the punishing hits in the backfield. The pass rush hasn’t been there for most of the season, but it was able to knock out two quarterbacks and stopped the Cougar attack cold. It’s not going to have the same results against Cal, but there’s a lot to play for. A win over the Bears would be a great step going into the offseason.

Washington State
… at Washington 30 ... Washington State 0 ... The season went from awful to completely and utterly disastrous. As if things couldn’t have gotten worse, getting shut out in the Apple Cup took things to a new low in a game that will likely be remembered as the one when Wazzu had to put a backup punter in the game at quarterback. That makes sense considering the punting game was about the only thing that went right this year. Not only did the Cougars lose 11 games, but outside of the win over SMU, they weren’t close in any game. Everything needs improving this offseason.
