James Aho connected three field goals including the game-winner from 27 yards out with 12 seconds to play to give New Mexico the win. Donovan Porterie connected with Victor James and Quintell Solomon on two first half touchdown passes, but he let Colorado State back in the game late as Nick Oppenneer returned an interception 97 yards for a score for a 27-23 fourth quarter lead. John Mosure carried the CSU offense with 177 yards and touchdown runs from one and two yards out, and Lou Greenwood took a pass 50 yards for a score. New Mexico answered with a 42-yard Demond Dennis scoring run.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BYU QB Max Hall completed 33-of-45 passes for 377 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions in the win over Air Force.

CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

Air Force
… at BYU 38 ... Air Force 21 ... Air Force got down early and never had a shot. This was a good matchup for the Falcons, and it all went straight into the tank when the passing game was needed to get back into the game. It’s another Mountain West year done and another season firmly entrenched at the No. 4 spot. That’s not a horrible thing to be bowl bound and to finish in the upper division, but it shows that there’s a hard ceiling on how good the program can be without a more effective passing game.

BYU
… at BYU 38 ... Air Force 21 ... BYU is back in the mix to finish as the No. 2 Mountain West team needing to beat Utah. This was a more impressive win over Air Force than it might appear, with Max Hall being Max Hall, playing a fiery game and making several big plays to force the Falcons to get out of their normal offense. But the team needs one more big win and one more big moment to make the season a success. For all the good things the Cougars have done, finishing 9-3 with losses to TCU and Utah would be a disappointment.

Colorado State
… at New Mexico 29 ... Colorado State 27 ... There’s rock bottom, and there’s what Colorado State has hit. It’s one thing to be on a bad losing streak, but to lose to a miserable New Mexico team and to be a lock for the Mountain West basement, or at least tie for it, has been one of the most bizarre freefalls in the entire 2009 season. The offense can’t score, the defense can’t stop anyone’s passing game, there’s little pressure into the backfield, and the special teams are hit or miss. It’s impossible to overstate how important the season ender against Wyoming is for the offseason. The program needs something to build on and something to point to this offseason.

New Mexico
… at New Mexico 29 ... Colorado State 27 ... With a sure-thing beatdown against TCU coming up, New Mexico found its one ray of light in an utter disaster of a season after the comeback win over Colorado State. The running game did just enough to get by, the defense was able to overcome getting destroyed by John Mosure and the CSU ground attack, and the offense was able to overcome a few mistakes to do what was needed late to get the win. Against TCU, keeping it less than a 40-point loss will be a success.

San Diego State
… at Utah 38 ... San Diego State 7 ... The Aztecs got down early and was never able to recover. It’s a bit too much to suggest that they were suffering a hangover from the loss to Wyoming, Utah came out and played well, but the team didn’t seem to have anything going its way early on and the game was over. Ryan Lindley and the passing game struggled, he was under pressure, while the ground game was non –existent. Even though SDSU is out of the bowl picture, a 5-7 record would be a nice step forward with a win over UNLV.

TCU
… TCU 45 ... at Wyoming 10 ... Let down? What let down? TCU turned it over four times, but it didn’t commit a penalty and the defense dominated throughout and never let Wyoming take advantage of the big mistakes. The offensive line pounded away for 334 yards, Andy Dalton kept the offense moving, and the game was never in doubt after Greg McCoy returned a second quarter kickoff return for a score. With only New Mexico to play, TCU is in the BCS. It’s over. The team did it, and the spotlight is well deserved. The Horned Frogs should’ve been in a few years ago, and now they get to show what they can do when everyone is watching.

UNLV
… Didn’t Play This Week

Utah
… at Utah 38 ... San Diego State 7 ... Utah showed the mental toughness to come out roaring after the loss to TCU. There wasn’t any looking ahead to BYU, and the team played up to its talent early on to blow away San Diego State to stay in the hunt for a ten-win regular season. The team got a total effort in the first half with the defense swarming over the Aztec passing game and Eddie Wide running well with room to move, unlike the TCU game. While the hope was obviously to get to a BCS game again, being second in the league with a 10-2 record and a win over BYU would be a nice season.

Wyoming
… TCU 45 ... at Wyoming 10 ... Wyoming isn’t good enough to battle against some of the better teams in America, and now it got to see two national title-caliber squads at home against Texas and TCU. There’s still hope for a bowl bid, but it’s going to take a win at Colorado State and it’s going to take a lot more from an offense that had one big late run against San Diego State, and that has been it over the last five games. The passing game is awful and the ground game went nowhere, but that was against TCU. It’s not a fair measure.
