GAME OF THE WEEK
at Ohio 38 … Northern Illinois 31
LaVon Brazill caught a 27-yard touchdown pass and took a punt 91 yards for a score for an early 14-0 Ohio lead on the way to a win that set up a showdown for the MAC East title against Temple. NIU got knocked out of the MAC West race despite outgaining Ohio 421 yards to 247 with Chad Spann running for two one-yard scores and Marcus Lewis catching a 26-yard scoring pass. Brazill gave Ohio a third quarter lead on a 37-yard catch, but the Bobcats didn’t take the lead for good until Julian Posey took an interception 41 yards for a touchdown.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Ohio WR LaVon Brazill caught five passes for 55 yards and two touchdowns, and returned four punts for 99 yards and a score
in the win over NIU.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Akron … at Bowling Green 36 ... Akron 20 ... Akron played relatively well in the loss. The 2-9 record might not be all that great, and the wheels appeared to be coming off after the 56-17 loss to Temple, but the offense moved the ball through the air and the team fought back to make it interesting in the fourth quarter. But it was still a double-digit loss and the season continues to be a disaster. Fortunately, Eastern Michigan is up next at home to close things out on a high note.
Ball State … Central Michigan 35 ... at Ball State 3 ... The defense had been struggling all season long, and Dan LeFevour and Central Michigan are on fire, but in the home finale, the team should’ve come up with a better performance. There was no downfield passing game and the ground game never opened up a hole for MiQuale Lewis. Cory Sykes got to tear off one big run, but that was it. There’s still one more chance to do something positive in this disaster of a year, but with no pass rush to get to Tim Hiller, Western Michigan should be able to put up big numbers. Ball State will have to find a way to keep up.
Bowling Green … at Bowling Green 36 ... Akron 20 ... The Falcons are closing strong. With three wins in a row, and with the offense playing consistently well, they have a chance to finish up with a nice 7-5 record with a home win over Toledo next week. Tyler Sheehan and Freddie Barnes continue to form an unstoppable passing combination, and Chris Bullock even added a little bit of pop to one of the nation’s worst running games. The defense is still a problem, and it’s going to be bombed on by the Rockets, but as long as Sheehan and Barnes are productive, a winning season is still possible.
Buffalo … Buffalo 42 ... at Miami University 17 ... The running game worked perfectly, gaining 240 yards, the offense was creative and effective, with Terrell Jackson throwing a touchdown pass off a trick play and with the passing game working when needed. As bad as the season has been, if UB can beat Kent State on Friday, the 5-7 final record won’t be so bad. To get that, the ground game will have to continue to carry the offensive workload.
Central Michigan … Central Michigan 35 ... at Ball State 3 ... Dan LeFevour continues to be amazing. As if his great career needed any more signature moments, he came up with yet another brilliant performance pitching a near-perfect game, on national TV, in the blowout win over Ball State. Not to be overshadowed was another great game from Antonio Brown, catching 11 passes for 170 yards and a score, but this game was about LeFevour. Temple’s Bernard Pierce is in the mix, but LeFevour might turn out to be a lock for MAC Player of the Year with this game cementing the honor. Now it’s on to the big game with NIU to get to the MAC title game, and the team couldn’t be playing better.
Eastern Michigan … at Toledo 47 ... Eastern
Michigan 21 ... The offense actually worked a little bit with Alex Gillett coming up with a nice game, but it wasn’t enough of a performance to keep up with Toledo and it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome get another disastrous performance by the defense. The run D continues to get gouged and has yet to show any sign of improvement. Akron is one of the MAC’s lightweights this season, and EMU needs to find something it can do well in the season finale to have something positive to build on for next year.
Kent State …
at Temple 47 ... Kent State 13 ... With Spencer Keith suffering a shoulder injury, the Golden Flashes suffered another big injury for an offense that was able to move on after the big problems early on. The defense wasn’t able to pick up the slack against Temple, but it’ll have to carry the team against Buffalo with Anthony Magazu likely to start in the season finale, with Giorgio Morgan also in the mix for time. A bowl game is a long shot, but it would be a great season if Kent State could finish 6-6. To do that, it’s going to take a total team effort.
Miami University … Buffalo 42 ... at Miami University 17 ... And the season ends with a resounding thud. The team showed good fight late with Zac Dysert throwing well in the second half, and in a nice nod, Daniel Raudabaugh got to close out his rocky career with an 11-of-20, 101-yard, one touchdown performance. Against Buffalo, MU held on to the ball for 39 minutes, but it didn’t matter. The run defense was too porous. In the end, the defensive front never showed up and the offense didn’t show enough consistency to keep up when challenged.
Northern Illinois … at Ohio 38 ... Northern Illinois 31 ... The running game wasn’t consistent enough and the defense inexplicably gave up 38 points to an offensively challenged Ohio team, and the MAC title dream went poof. NIU might still go bowling even with a loss at CMU next week, in what was supposed to be for the West title, but it has to win to secure a spot. With the No. 1 D in the MAC and the No. 1 running game, the Huskies have treat this like a playoff game to get a 13th game.
Ohio … at Ohio 38 ... Northern Illinois 31 ... With a fantastic win over
NIU, with the offense stepping up with one of its best games of the season when it needed it the most, it’s a one game season to play for the MAC title. The Bobcats, if nothing else, have secured a bowl bid with the win over NIU, but with Temple coming to Athens, the chance is there to get a win and play Central Michigan for the championship. The run defense won’t have Bernard Pierce to deal with, but the offense that has been so hit or miss throughout the season will have to come up with its best effort yet. Theo Scott will have to be the different, needing to get the passing game going against an Owl D that won’t give up much against the run.
Temple …
at Temple 47 ... Kent State 13 ... The Temple offensive line has to get the job done to get to the MAC title game. It was fantastic against Kent State, paving the way for 156 yards and two touchdowns from Matt Brown, and with Bernard Pierce out against Ohio, the offense will need everyone else to step up. Temple will go bowling no matter what happens in Athens, but it’s going to take a special effort to beat Ohio to play for the whole ball of wax. On a nine-game winning streak, the team has figured out how to get the job done when needed, but with nothing happening from the passing game, it’ll be interesting to see what Brown and the rest of the O can come up with.
Toledo … at Toledo 47 ... Eastern Michigan 21 ... Toledo pitched a near-perfect offensive game with Austin Dantin only missing on one throw and Morgan Williams and DaJuane Collins running wild on the awful Eastern Michigan defense. After the big collapse in the second half of the year, the Rockets have a chance to finish strong if they can get a win over Bowling Green. A victory would mean a 6-6 record and a nice step forward in the first year under Tim Beckman, but more than the win, the game is all about getting more live work in for Austin Dantin and the young players. It’s time to look toward 2010, even though it’s going to be Senior Day at home.
