GAME OF THE WEEK
at Rice 30 … UTEP 29
Rice got three touchdowns from Charles Ross, including two short ones in the fourth quarter, and the defense held on for dear life. UTEP turned it over six times hurt mostly by two late Donald Buckram fumbles, including one on the goal line, to overshadow a brilliant day with three first half touchdown runs. Trevor Vittatoe connected with Donavon Kemp for a 40-yard touchdown in the fourth, but turnovers proved to be too costly.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UCF RB Brynn Harvey ran 16 times for 129 yards and three touchdowns in the first half in the win over Tulane.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
East Carolina… at East Carolina 37 ... UAB 21 ... Alright, ECU, it’s down to one game. The Pirates will get to defend their crown with a home win over Southern Miss next week, and to get that, the offense will have to be as explosive as it was this week against UAB, while the defense will have to come up with stops early. The ECU secondary isn’t playing well, but the lines have been fantastic over the second half of the year.
Houston … at Houston 55 ... Memphis 14 ... Houston is still getting ripped apart on the ground, but the defense, overall, came up with one of its best games of the year. Case Keenum and the offense got up early and never led Memphis breathe in a rare layup, and now, all it will take is a win over Rice to go play for the title. It hasn’t always been pretty, but with the way Keenum is playing, there’s no reason there can’t be three more wins to be had.
Marshall … at Marshall 34 ... SMU 31... It hasn’t been an even year for the Herd, having a hard time going on any sort of a run and not getting great production from any one spot, outside of timely play from the running game, but the team is bowl eligible and has a chance at an eight win season by beating UTEP and winning a bowl game, if it gets a bid. Without Darius Marshall to rely on, the offense got terrific games from Terrell Edwards, Martin Ward and Aaron Dobson to keep pace with the Mustangs, but there were problems. MU won despite committing an embarrassing 15 penalties for 144 yards.
Memphis … at Houston 55 ... Memphis 14 ... Memphis isn’t giving up. The Tigers are battling hard and they’re trying to make something positive happen late, but they’re on a five-game losing streak with a trip to Tulsa to close. The defense was too porous this year, the passing game too erratic, especially against the Cougars, and Curtis Steele didn’t do enough to carry the attack. This wasn’t supposed to be a good year, but 2-9 at this point makes the Tigers one of the league’s most disappointing teams.
Rice … at Rice 30 ... UTEP 29... Rice didn’t get any offense against UTEP, but it was able to take advantage of a slew of mistakes to capitalize on short scores. After a disastrous start, the Owls have won two straight and can make their season close out on a high note with a win at Houston. Can the running game that has done nothing all year crank it up against the miserable Cougar run D? It had better to have any hope of keeping up with Case Keenum.
Southern Miss … at Southern Miss 44 ... Tulsa 34 ... The defense didn’t show up against Tulsa, but the offense came up big when it had to, highlighted by the huge touchdowns from DeAndre Brown, to stay alive for the Conference USA title. Winning four of its last five games, USM can get a second crack against Houston (the likely West winner) by beating East Carolina next week. That’s not going to be a walk in the park, but if the offense can be explosive, it has a shot. ECU is good, but it isn’t the killer of last year. USM can win this, and it can beat Houston (or SMU, if it miraculously gets in).
SMU … at Marshall 34 ... SMU 31 ... SMU blew it. It had to beat Marshall this week before getting a relative layup against Tulane, but the defense couldn’t hold on late, the offense struggled with its consistency, and now it’s going to take a Houston loss to lowly Rice to have a chance to play for the conference title. Even so, this was a good, hard fought road game that the team was in until the end. But after winning three straight, this is going to be tough to swallow if the Mustangs can’t beat the Green Wave.
Tulane … at UCF 49 ... Tulane 0 ... What the heck was that? It’s not like the team was playing all that poorly in recent weeks, but instead of showing improvement at this point in the year, the Green Wave is getting worse with a disastrous 50-yard offensive output. The offensive line got eaten alive, while the defense got down early with no hope of picking up the slack. The team will play out the string against a fired up SMU team that needs the win to stay in the Conference USA title chase.
Tulsa … at Southern Miss 44 ... Tulsa 34 ... Tulsa got 15 tackles from Andre Watson and 16 from Ronnie Thornton, but the defense didn’t do enough to stop the big play and didn’t hold up when the offense turned it over in bad spots. Tulsa cranked out 589 yards and got a phenomenal day out of Damaris Johnson with 17 catches, but it was still a season-crippling loss. Tulsa gets a layup against Memphis next week to close out the year, and it would’ve been a bowl season had it gotten by USM this week. Now on a six-game losing streak, this has been a huge disappointment for a team that should’ve been in the Conference USA title hunt.
UAB … at East Carolina 37 ... UAB 21... It’s the same old story as Joe Webb is carrying the team and isn’t getting a lot of help. UAB is still in the mix for bowl eligibility and still has a chance at closing out strong with UCF coming into town this week, but to beat the hot Knights, Webb will have to go ballistic and the defense will have to handle the sudden UCF balance. The defense
is among the worse in the nation, especially against the pass, and it’ll likely be a shootout.
UCF … at UCF 49 ... Tulane 0... Coming off the excellent win over Houston, UCF solidified a bowl slot with a dominant win. The team’s best performance this year, the defense was camped out in Tulane’s backfield, while the offense got a huge day early from Brett Hodges and put it into cruise control. This was a nice home finale, and now it’s time to get high in the bowl pecking order, needing to deal with Joe Webb and UAB next. If the offense is as balanced and as explosive as it was this week, getting the win shouldn’t be a problem.
UTEP… at Rice 30 ... UTEP 29... UTEP can’t stop screwing up. It dominated Rice at times, holding the Owls to just 227 yards of total offense, but six turnovers and 12 penalties kept the typical late season Miner swoon rolling. Now on a four-game losing streak after being deep in the hunt for the Conference USA title, this has been a heartbreaking slide with all four games coming by seven points or fewer. The season will close out with Marshall coming to town.
