GAME OF THE WEEK
at Northwestern 33 … Wisconsin 31
Mike Kafka threw two touchdown passes and WR Zeke Markshausen connected with Sidney Stewart on a 38-yard touchdown pass as Northwestern shocked the Badgers. Wisconsin’s offense struggled after the early part in the second quarter, getting helped by a 68-yard punt return for a score from David Gilreath to stay alive. Garrett Graham caught two touchdown passes including a 13-yarder to pull the Badgers within two, and UW had two chances to take the lead but John Clay lost a fumble and Scott Tolzien threw an interception. The Wildcats only managed two field goals in the second half, and Stefan Demos nailed four field goals on the day.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Northwestern QB Mike Kafka completed 26-of-40 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns and ran seven times for 17 yards
in the win over Wisconsin.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Illinois … Didn’t Play This Week
Indiana … Purdue 38 .... at Indiana 21 ... Indiana closed out with a five game losing streak and finished 4-8, but it was better than the final record. Ben Chappell had a nice second half of the season, and Darius Willis provided hope for the future of the running game with a 142-yard day, but in the end, IU had a losing season and couldn’t come through when it needed to. For next year, the defense has to be better after finishing last in the Big Ten in yards and points allowed. The offense will be good, but it won’t be so good that it can consistently crank out 35 points per game.
Iowa … at 12 .. Minnesota 0 ... It wasn’t pretty, and that’s being nice about it. The defense was terrific, stuffing the Minnesota offense time and again, and the special teams were solid, with the punting game doing its part, but the offense was a big bowl of yuck. On the plus side, Adam Robinson ran extremely well early, coming off an ankle injury, but he ended up sitting out the second half after taking a big shot. James Vandenberg didn’t move the chains and struggled on third downs, but Pat Angerer and the defense took care of the game. Was this enough to make the BCS want the Hawkeyes? No, but they should get in anyway.
Michigan … Ohio State 21 ... at Michigan 10
... And that ends that. There’s really no major shame in losing to Ohio State, especially for a Michigan team that’s still trying to figure out what it’s doing, but to close out with five straight losses and seven straight defeats against FBS teams is going to make for an ugly offseason. The defense wasn’t too bad against the Buckeyes, but the key going forward will be Tate Forcier, who has to play far better and has to be far stingier with the ball after gift-wrapping too many easy chances. Is Rich Rodriguez going to be fired? No, but the pressure is on more than ever for 2010.
Michigan State … Penn State 42 ... at Michigan State 14 ... What happened to the defense? Greg Jones has done his part, making 15 tackles against Penn State, but the secondary hasn’t even been close over the last few weeks. In the last three Big Ten games, MSU allowed 42 points to Minnesota, 37 to Purdue, and 42 to Penn State, and this drip off the map came after holding Iowa to 15 points. Over the next several weeks before the bowl game, Mark Dantonio has to use all the pass rushing talents of his defensive front to generate more production from the secondary. The offense has to be far more consistent, and it has one last chance to produce.
Minnesota … at Iowa 12 ... Minnesota 0 ... The Minnesota defense came up with a tremendous effort, but the offense was beyond awful … again. Adam Weber is lost without Eric Decker to throw to, while the running game is a disaster. The Big Ten’s worst offense has several weeks to work on coming up with something, anything to throw out there for the bowl game, but there will have to be something quirky to overcome the lack of overall execution. Nothing has worked over the last few weeks.
Northwestern … at Northwestern 33 ... Wisconsin 31 ... Northwestern’s offense picked a fantastic time to have its best game of the year. Mike Kafka bombed away on the soft Wisconsin corners, and while the attack fizzled in the second half, it was the team’s third straight win and fourth in five games. Now, technically, Northwestern finished fourth in the Big Ten standings behind Ohio State, Iowa, and Penn State, but will that matter in the bowl picture? If Wisconsin beats Hawaii and finishes 8-4, because of the fan base, it might get a Florida bowl on New Year’s Day over the Wildcats. NU deserves to be in the Outback.
Ohio State … Ohio State 21 ...at Michigan
10 ... The running game has kicked it into high gear, and because of it, Ohio State is going to the Rose Bowl as the outright Big Ten champion. The offensive line stepped up its play over the second half of the season, and while it might not be a bad thing to keep Terrelle Pryor from having to throw the ball, the next six weeks, and the entire offseason, has to be devoted to figuring out how to create some semblance of a downfield passing game. A win over Michigan, a Big Ten title, and the Rose Bowl; it’s been a strong season.
Penn State … Penn State 42 ... at Michigan State 14 ... Penn State will try to make a push and lobby for an at-large BCS bid, but that’s not going to happen … maybe. Iowa has a better case, having beaten the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley, but this is Penn State and Joe Paterno is still running the show. The BCS will want PSU, but it will also want Iowa and its fan base. The team made a statement against Michigan State, highlighted by Darryl Clark’s passing and Navorro Bowman, who made ten tackles, a sack, and three tackles for loss, but the that might mean a New Year’s Day bowl in Florida. That’s not bad.
Purdue … Purdue 38 .... at Indiana 21 ... Purdue got the passing game going early, was +4 in turnover margin, and came away with the Old Oaken Bucket as it showed what it could do when it played up to its capabilities and didn’t make a slew of mistakes. While this wasn’t a bowl season, closing out with four wins in the final six showed how much progress was made under Danny Hope, and it showed how close the team came to having a special year. Purdue lost five games by seven points or fewer. Against IU, Joey Elliott was nearly perfect, and closed out his career on a high note after throwing a key late interception in the loss to Michigan State.
Wisconsin … at Northwestern 33 ... Wisconsin 31
... Wisconsin is going to be kicking itself for this loss if it misses out on a New Year’s Day bowl game. The offense was fine against the Northwestern defense, but two key fumbles and not enough of a commitment to John Clay and the ground game, even though he ran for 100 yards on 23 carries, proved costly. The biggest problem, though, was the soft play from the cornerbacks. The Badger secondary hadn’t been exposed too often by the mediocre Big Ten passing games, but Northwestern didn’t have that problem. There has to be a big concern that Hawaii could bomb away for huge yards in a few weeks when the Badgers make the long trip.
