GAME OF THE WEEK
Connecticut 33 … at Notre Dame 30 2OT
In the second overtime, Connecticut answered a Notre Dame field goal with a four-yard Andre Dixon run for the thrilling win. The Huskies and Irish traded touchdown passes in the first overtime, with Kashif Moore catching an 11-yard scoring pass to give UConn the lead, only to have Michael Floyd answer with a leaping four-yard grab. The Huskies could’ve avoided overtime, but Dave Teggart, who hit a 29-yard field goal with 1:10 to play to tie the score at 20, missed a 37-yarder with no time left on the clock. The Irish took an early 14-0 lead on a eight-yard Golden Tate catch and a one-yard Jimmy Clausen run, but UConn was able to run the ball all game long without a problem and got a 96-yard kickoff return for a score in the third quarter.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK South Florida QB B.J. Daniels completed 20-of-34 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown, and he ran 22 times for 141 yards and two scores in the win over
Louisville.
CONFERENCE ROUNDUP
Cincinnati … Didn’t Play This Week
Connecticut … Connecticut 33 ... at Notre Dame 30 2OT ... Connecticut was way overdue to get a close win its way. While the Huskies have found ways to collapse over the last few weeks, and they appeared to be on their way to another heartbreaker after the missed field goal at the end of regulation that forced overtime, but they were able to keep the offense moving, especially on the ground, to come up with the win to turn the season back around after a three-game losing streak. With home games against Syracuse and USF still to play, the Huskies need one more win to go bowling.
Louisville … at USF 34 ... Louisville 22 .. The Cardinals stayed in the game for three quarters, but the defense didn’t come up with an answer for B.J. Daniels and the offense didn’t do enough to keep up the pace. The Bull offensive line continues to struggle, and that’s not a plus against an aggressive Rutgers defensive front in the season finale. The problem is that there isn’t a whole lot to build on. The young players getting time don’t appear to be world-beaters to get too fired up about, while the offense is having way too many problems putting points on the board. It’s not going to be much better next week.
Pitt … Didn’t Play This Week
Rutgers … at Syracuse 31 ... Rutgers 13 ... What the heck was that? After a near-perfect performance against South Florida on national TV, Rutgers went into the tank as the offensive line had a disastrous game and the defense couldn’t get off the field. QB Tom Savage never had a chance against Syracuse pass rush, and now, Rutgers has to win at Louisville or against West Virginia to secure a strong bowl. On the plus side, Ryan D’Imperio made 14 tackles.
South Florida … at USF 34 ... Louisville 22 ... A week after being awful in the loss to Rutgers, B.J. Daniels was terrific showing why he’s the type of player the program can build around for the next few years. While the Bulls hit their typical midseason lull, losing three of their last four games, they were able to pull up out of the nosedive with a win over Louisville; but it was rocky. The Cardinals hung around for way too long, considering the Bulls cranked out 538 yards and held on to the ball for 36:41. Against Miami, USF will have to continue the offensive balance, and will need to do a better job defensively on third downs, to pull out the win.
Syracuse … at Syracuse 31 ... Rutgers 13 ... Where was this performance throughout the year? The defensive front was strong at getting into the backfield all season long, and it was dominant against the Scarlet Knights, while the offensive line came up with one of its best games of the year keeping Greg Paulus upright and paving the way for a nice day from the ground game. This might be seen as a bit of a turning point in the first year under Doug Marrone, but that’s only true if the Orange come up with a strong performance in the regular season finale at Connecticut.
