Big 12
Game of the Week
Illinois 52 ... Missouri
42
Missouri cranked out 549 yards of total offense, but had a hard time putting
Juice Williams and the Illini away. Williams threw for 451 yards with five
touchdown passes, but the Illinois defense didn't have an answer for the Tiger
passing game, either. Chase Daniel threw three touchdown passes including two in
the third quarter to Tommy Saunders, while the special teams and defense also
came through with Jeremy Maclin answering an Illinois 34-yard interception
return for a touchdown by Derek Walker with a kickoff return for a score. Sean
Weatherspoon killed the Illinois fourth quarter comeback with a 35-yard
interception return for a score with 3:18 to play.
Big 12
Player of the Week
Texas QB Colt McCoy completed 24 of 29 passes for 222
yards and three touchdowns, and he led the team with 103 yards and a touchdown
on 12 carries.

Roundup
Baylor
… It's obviously not going to happen
overnight. Wake Forest was the wrong
team for BU to face right away
considering it doesn't make too many
mistakes, capitalizes on everything, and
has a strong ground game. True freshman
Robert Griffin has a long was to go
before he turns into a steady playmaker,
but he didn't have much of a chance with
little help coming from the other skill
players. After a rough first week,
Northwestern State will be a breath of
fresh air next week.
Colorado … In a high-energy,
emotionally charged game like the win
over Colorado State, Colorado kept its
cool, got a good pass rush, and enough
explosion to come away with the
tougher-than-it-appeared win. Cody
Hawkins took another step in his
maturity with a strong performance
making few mistakes and keeping the
chains moving. This was the type of game
Colorado wanted to win and be done with,
knowing that it would be a big, tough
test. Now comes Eastern Washington, who
has a good passing game, to tune up for
West Virginia.
Iowa State … The win over South
Dakota State was far better for the
Cyclones than even the 44-17 final score
shows. The defense was aggressive and
ball-hawking, but most importantly, the
quarterback rotation of Austen Arnaud
and Phillip Bates worked. The two
combined to complete 13 of 19 passes for
159 yards and two touchdowns with no
interceptions, and Bates used his great
speed to tear off 55 yards on nine
carries.
Kansas … It wasn't exactly the
perfect performance that KU got used to
putting up last year, but it was an easy
win over FIU as the offense figured out
what it has to work with. Using three
different backs, the ground game was
fine, and Todd Reesing did what he
needed to do, but it was the defense
that stood out. The Jayhawks only
allowed FIU to convert two of 14 third
down chances and came up with two second
half turnovers to end the fun. Against
Louisiana Tech, a steady workhorse has
to emerge for the ground game.
Kansas State … The North Texas
win was exactly what the team needed
after the disastrous end to last season,
and most importantly, it was a clean,
efficient performance considering all
the new faces in place. Josh Freeman
took a major step up in his play from
last year, spreading the ball around
well and appearing to be in total
command of the offense. The defense
didn't let UNT breathe, and while Ian
Campbell didn't have a huge day, it
should be noted that he had a sack now
that he's back to his normal position on
the end.
Missouri … The offense was in
midseason form against Illinois and the
defense did a great job of hitting Juice
Williams, but the secondary had way too
many breakdowns and gave up way too many
big plays. That's not a plus with all
the great Big 12 quarterbacks on the
slate. It's not time to worry just yet,
Illinois was bombing away in a comeback
mode, but the pass defense can't make
errors if Mizzou has any dreams of
winning at Texas.
Nebraska … The defense might not
have been as stifling against Western
Michigan as Bo Pelini might have liked,
and the running game was merely average,
but it was a dominant win over a good
MAC team with plenty of veteran.
Defensively, Cody Glenn appeared to be a
natural at linebacker making plays all
over the field, but the big story was
Joe Ganz. He threw two picks, but he had
good command of the offense and made the
big throws when needed.
Oklahoma … Oklahoma was supposed
to obliterate a bad Chattanooga team,
the final score could've been 100-2 if
Bob Stoops wanted to keep things
rolling, but more importantly, the
passing attack was sharp. After
struggling at times this off-season, Sam
Bradford didn't misfire and combined
with Joey Halzle to hit 31 of 38 passes
for 305 yards and three touchdowns with
an interception thrown by Halzle.
There's nothing to complain about going
into the Cincinnati game.
Oklahoma State … The offense
wasn't awful against Washington State,
but it wasn't consistent and didn't seem
to find any sort of a flow until late.
The defense did a great job of keeping
the Cougar passing game from getting
deep, forcing Gary Rogers to dink and
dunk while also stuffing the running
game. It was the special teams that gave
the Cowboys the easy win with the great
play from the return game, but even
though this might not have been a
perfect game, it was a blowout win far
from home against a BCS conference team.
That's not bad for the opening day.
Texas … Colt McCoy played a near
perfect game against Florida Atlantic
doing everything right from finding the
right receiver, taking off when he had
to, and looking like a leader who can
carry the team. The rotation at running
back worked, but in a perfect world,
McCoy isn't the team's leading rusher.
For one game at least, the pass defense
wasn't bad. It allowed 253 yards to
Rusty Smith, but the Owls had abandoned
the running game from the start.
Texas A&M … Arkansas State is a
decent Sun Belt team, but this was still
a disastrous loss to open the Mike
Sherman era. Yes, Mike Goodson became
the focal point of the attack, as
expected, leading the team in both
rushing and receiving. A&M made
mistakes; ASU didn't. It's that simple.
The Aggie defense did a good job getting
the ASU offense off the field, but the
offense has to be far, far better or
this will be an ugly start with a tough
game at New Mexico next week and Miami
to follow.
Texas Tech… Eastern Washington is
one of the best FCS teams going into the
year with a high-octane offense, so
there's no real need to get worried
quite yet about the defense having a few
problems. Penalties were the biggest
problem with the Red Raiders committing
18 for 169 yards. Fortunately, the team
has four games to work on tightening up
before dealing with Kansas State.
