Big East Game of the Week

Colorado 17 ... West Virginia 14 OT
West Virginia's Pat McAfee's field goal attempt in overtime bonked off the upright, and Colorado's Aric Goodman nailed his 25-yard field attempt for the win, and a scholarship, awarded to the walk-on after the game. It marked the end of a strange game for the Mountaineers, who came back after a 14-0 deficit with a six-yard Pat White touchdown run in the first quarter and a 39-yard White dash in the third, but a badly mismanaged final drive killed a chance to get into field goal range at the end of regulation. Colorado started out hot with Cody Hawkins touchdown passes from 38 yards out to Josh Smith on the first drive of the game and from 13 yards away to Patrick Devenney just two minutes later. WVU ran for 311 yards, but was held to 43 passing yards.

Big East Player of the Week
Louisville RB Victor Anderson ran 18 times for 176 yards and three touchdowns, and caught two passes for six yards in the win over Kansas State

Conference
Roundup

Cincinnati … The system works. Whether it’s Ben Mauk, Dustin Grutza or Tony Pike, the Cincinnati offense is fantastic at producing efficient passers. John Goebel had a great day running the ball against Miami University, but this game was all about Tony Pike, who was nearly flawless. He doesn’t have to be spectacular, but he needs to be solid. With tune-ups against Akron and Marshall before Big East play kicks in, he’ll have time to get even better.
Connecticut … It's been shaky at times, and it took a battle to get by Baylor, but Connecticut is 4-0 and doing the same thing it did last year. Run the ball, get timely defense, and win close battles. The defense needs to do some tweaking in the secondary, and the passing game hasn't been rolling, but 4-0 is 4-0 with Big East play coming up next at Temple. To win the close games, the Huskies have to do all the little things right. While there were two interceptions against Baylor, there were only two penalties and four sacks.
Louisville …It's one thing to roll up big numbers on Tennessee Tech, but it's another to run wild on Kansas State. Victor Anderson is the new superstar after ripping off big run after big run, showing a great blend of speed and power, but give credit to the offensive line. Anderson had plenty of room to move. On the down side, the secondary had a nightmare of a time keeping the Wildcats from hitting the home run, but overall, this was a huge performance for a Louisville team that needed to show it could be the real deal once Big East play kicks in.
Pitt … Pitt hardly played like a world-beater against Iowa, the offense struggled to do anything through the air, but it was a nice win over a good opponent. It's premature to say that this should change the season around, but the chance is there to go on a little run with a trip to woeful Syracuse next week. The defense has to keep up the pressure that screwed up the Iowa offense, but Bill Stull has to do a far better job of keeping the chains moving.
Rutgers … Rutgers needs this week’s date with Morgan State in the worst way. The offense isn’t scoring, QB Mike Teel is struggling, and the defense got soft against Navy at the worst time. On the plus side, Jordan Brooks was terrific running the ball, providing some hope for a rushing attack again, but the team appears to be imploding. Teel slapped a teammate, cornerback Glen Lee after the interception that sealed the Navy win. This is a frustrated team that needs something positive to happen in a big hurry.
South Florida … If South Florida wants to be taken seriously, it has to start playing like it. Any team with any hopes of being considered among the elite of the elite shouldn’t have so many problems with Florida International. There was the emotional fright of the Brouce Mompremier injury, and the team played poorly throughout, but this team is supposed to be special. It didn’t play like it, and now comes the battle on the road against a resurgent NC State team.
Syracuse … Syracuse had two players run for over 100 yards on Northeastern, Cameron Dantley completed 14-of-17 passes and didn’t throw a pick, and still it took everything in the bag to get the win. The defense got picked apart by the Husky passing game, and the offense didn’t take control of the game in the fourth quarter and put it away getting outscored 14-6. Even so, a win is a win, but the offense can’t play much better and it was still close. That’s not good going into the Big East opener against Pitt.
West Virginia… Bill Stewart is going through some growing pains. From the clock problems at the end of regulation, to the failure to adjust the offense on the fly to generate anything more than Pat White and Noel Devine running the ball, this wasn't a good answer for the East Carolina loss. The defense was fantastic after the first five minutes and yeah, the running game did work. However, the team needs to mix up the offense a little more and has to do more to crank out long drives. Remember, it's all about the Big East race. Things have to be tighter by the time the Rutgers game hits in early October.
