WAC Game of
the Week
New Mexico
State 48 … Nevada 45
In a wild shootout, New Mexico State got three touchdown passes from
Chase Holbrook and a 83-yard fumble return for a touchdown to pull
off the upset. Nevada roared on the ground with 313 yards helped by
a 32-yard scoring run from Colin Kaepernick, but it was the four
touchdowns from Vai Taua that helped the Wolf Pack keep up the pace.
Kaepernick hit Chris Wellington for a 19-yard touchdown pass to pull
the Pack within three with just under four minutes to play, but the
Aggies were able to run out the clock. The two teams combined for 56
first downs and 1,020 yards.
WAC
Player of the Week
New Mexico State QB Chase Holbrook
completed 28-of-47 passes for 409 yards and three touchdowns with an
interception, and ran for a score in the win over Nevada.

Conference
Roundup
Boise State
… Boise State went on the road and
simply out-physicaled Southern Miss, at
least on defense, while Kellen Moore
keeps on improving as an all-around
passer. This was the big test. The WAC
schedule doesn’t really offer any
challenges outside of the road trips to
San Jose State and Nevada, but those are
very winnable. After winning this easily
at USM, there’s no reason to not run the
table.
Fresno State … Fresno State might
have beaten Idaho 45-32, but the defense
remains a tremendous disappointment.
It’s not tackling, it’s not physical
enough against the run, and there’s no
pass rush whatsoever. Idaho might be the
nation’s worst team, and the Bulldogs
struggled to put them away in the fourth
quarter. Tom Brandstater is doing fine
and the offense is moving the ball, but
the defense has to show it can stuff
someone next week against Utah State, or
the following trip to Louisiana Tech
will be a season-crushing loss. FSU has
to be perfect from here on out.
Hawaii … Hawaii isn’t going to
bomb away like the Colt Brennan days,
but the defense came up with a nice
performance in the win over Louisiana
Tech while Inoke Funaki is growing into
the quarterback job. At 2-1 in the WAC
with a trip to Boise State ahead, the
team can make a real statement with a
win. More likely, the Warriors will have
to take care of business at home while
coming up with a key road win over New
Mexico State. A bowl game is extremely
possible, but Funaki has to make the
offense more explosive for it to happen.
Idaho … Considering how miserable
the season has been so far, Idaho showed
signs of offensive life outgaining
Fresno State 452 yards to 443. Nathan
Enderle had one of his best days under
center as he didn’t make many mistakes
and he kept the offense moving. It’s a
moral victory; the team like last year,
doesn’t quit.
Louisiana Tech … The Louisiana
Tech no-huddle offense didn’t exactly
light up the Hawaii defense. Taylor
Bennett struggled with his accuracy and
threw two interceptions, but Ross
Jenkins wasn’t much better. The Bulldogs
should be getting more form a running
game that’s hit of miss, but Daniel
Porte and WR Phillip Livas made plays
when they had the chance. Now there’s a
layup against Idaho that should break
the gloom of a bad two-game losing
streak. It’s time to get the offense
working; that’s what the Vandals are
for.
Nevada … Devastating. Nevada
can’t afford to lose home games, much
less home games to New Mexico State. The
Wolf Pack defense was non-existent
despite generating a decent pass rush.
Vai Taua was magnificent as he showed
he’s more than good enough to finally be
a workhorse for the attack weeks after
Luke Lippencott was knocked out with his
knee injury. QB Colin Kaepernick was his
normal great self, and he was able to
lead the way to a key late score, but
the defense couldn’t get him the ball
back. Fortunately, Utah State is up next
to cure all the ills.
New Mexico State … Was the win
over Nevada the biggest win for New
Mexico State in the Hal Mumme era? It
might have been. Now the Aggies are in
the WAC title chase, and while the
defense isn’t good enough to win the
whole ball of wax, a bowl game is
possible. The offense finally exploded
with Chase Holbrook roaring for 409
passing yards, but just as important was
the way the offense closed out the final
four minutes. Nevada had all the
momentum after pulling within three
late, but Holbrook ended all the drama.
San Jose State and Idaho are up next
before the showdown against Boise State.
San Jose State … 2-0 in
conference play and with the offense
starting to roll under Kyle Reed. San
Jose State is going to be a player.
After rolling over Utah State, the
Spartans have to do more on the road
against a confident and experienced New
Mexico State team coming off a win over
Nevada. San Jose’s secondary has done an
excellent job over the last few weeks,
but to win, more will be needed from the
ground game to keep Chase Holbrook and
the Aggie offense off the field.
Utah State… Diondre Borel tried
to come in to help the cause against San
Jose State, but the Aggies just don’t
have the firepower to make comebacks on
a regular basis. There isn’t much of a
running game considering the team is in
scramble mode, and 119 passing yards
isn’t much to mount a comeback with.
Even so, Borel is a playmaker who at
least gives defenses something to worry
about.
