Pac 10 Game of
the Week
Oregon 65 … Oregon
State 38
Oregon obliterated the Beavers with 694 yards of total offense and with 37 first
half points to all but ruin OSU’s Rose Bowl hopes. Jeremiah Masoli threw three
touchdown passes and ran for a 14-yard score, while the defense helped out with
two interception returns for touchdowns as Walter Thurmond took one back 40
yards in the second and Spencer Paysinger returned a pass 70 yards for a score
in the fourth. Oregon State, without star RB Jacquizz Rodgers, came up with some
offense of its own as Lyle Moevao threw five touchdown passes with two to Shane
Morales, but the defense couldn’t stop the Duck big played. Jeremiah Johnson ran
for an 83-yard score in the second and Terence Scott took a pass 76 yards for a
touchdown in the fourth.
Pac 10
Player of the Week
Oregon RB Jeremiah Johnson ran 17 times for 219 yards
and a touchdown in the win over Oregon State.

Roundup
Arizona
… Just when it seems like Arizona is
going to turn a corner, it has problems.
Now on a streak of three losses in four
games, with the lone win coming against
Washington State, the Wildcats are
having problems coming through. It’s not
like they’re being blown out, all four
losses in Pac 10 play have been in
close, down-to-the-wire battles, but
they’re not able to get the key plays
late. They’re still going to a bowl, no
matter what happens against Arizona
State, but a win over the Sun Devils
might be a must to keep Mike Stoops out
of hot water.
Arizona State … Just stay alive.
Arizona State came up with a brutal, brutal offensive game against UCLA,
but Dexter Davis and the defensive front came up with constant pressure on Kevin
Craft and forced mistake after mistake after mistake. The defense did its part,
but to beat Arizona, the offense will have to show something. Rudy Carpenter was
thrown around like a rag doll, while there was no running game to speak of. This
was one of the stunning games in Sun Devil history that’ll be remembered for all
the big defensive plays, and at this point in the weird, disappointing year,
just being alive for a bowl game is enough right now.
California … Cal got a very
motivated, healthy-as-can-be Jahvid Best
against Stanford and bam, the game was
over. Considering the two game losing
streak the Bears were on, to come out
and blast the arch-rival could change
around the tone of the season. With a
layup against Washington to close things
out, an 8-4 regular season wouldn’t be
that bad considering all the
inconsistencies this year. If Best and
the rest of the offense are as efficient
as they were against Stanford, beating
the Huskies and winning a bowl game
won’t be a problem. The talent is
starting to shine through.
Oregon … Oregon did
everything big against Oregon State with big play after big play, a near-perfect
day from Jeremiah Masoli, and even some big mistakes with 15 penalties for 129
yards. While Oregon State had all the pressure in the
world on its shoulders, Oregon played loose and effective showing tremendous
team speed and the potential to build on going into the bowl season and next
year. This might be the game that propels the program into a monster 2009.
Oregon State … With starting
quarterback Lyle Moevao out and Sean
Canfield in, and with Jacquizz Rodgers
knocked out with a shoulder injury, the
Oregon State offense appeared to be dead
against Arizona. Instead, the O came
through with a late flourish, the
defense held tough, and now the Beavers
just need to beat Oregon in the Civil
War to go to the Rose Bowl. However, the
attack will have to continue to be
creative without Rodgers, as his
brother, James, will likely be the most
dangerous rushing weapon and Canfield
will have to do even more with the
passing game.
Stanford … To have such a good
season collapse with a three-game losing
streak to miss out on a bowl game will
make this a hard off-season. The defense
collapsed over the last three games, and
while the offense had its moments this
year, there wasn’t enough to keep up
with the better teams like USC and Cal.
The losses to Notre Dame and UCLA now
appear to be really awful, and that’ll
haunt the team, but to get blasted by
Cal to end things will really hurt. It
shows how much the team has to improve
the passing game to keep up in
shootouts.
UCLA … Is Kevin Craft’s
lack of improvement more of an indictment on him or the UCLA coaching staff? The
Bruin coaches are among the best teachers around, but they’re just not getting
through as Craft is still making dumb throw after dumb throw this late into the
season. To be fair, against Arizona State, he had to press a little bit with the
running game going nowhere, but basics, like not putting enough air under the
ball and throwing it to the back pylon on what turned out to be the game-killing
100-yard pick-six from Troy Nolan shows that things aren’t sinking in. For all
the problems and all the pain of a losing season, a win over USC could change
all of that.
USC … Ho hum, business as
usual for a defense that’s suffocating everyone. Now that Penn State is within
its sights, the Trojans have to use the UCLA game to set an even more
intimidating tone, if it’s not all true. Stuffing bad offense after bad offense
doesn’t make the USC D as special as many are making it out to be, or as good as
the numbers might show, but it’s very good. This is a group to win a Rose Bowl
with, but Penn State isn’t Notre Dame. The USC linebackers will be pounded on,
for good and bad considering the way they handled themselves this week.
Washington … The misery goes on
for Washington as it had Washington
State all but beaten in the Apple Cup,
but couldn’t come up with a stop in the
final minute. The offense actually
worked a little bit, but if you can’t
score more than 10 points on this
defense in regulation, you don’t deserve
to pull off a big win. There’s one game
left coming against Cal, and while it
might not seem like it, a win would mean
everything. All the pain and all the
ugliness of the season wouldn’t be
erased, but at least there would be
something to show for it.
Washington State … Washington
State might have been considered the
worst Pac 10 team of all-time, but
that’s all gone now. With one shocking
comeback in the final moments to beat
Washington, the Cougars have taken a
huge, positive step in the first year of
the Paul Wulff era. It wasn’t a great
overall performance, there are still
major problems with the passing game and
the overall efficiency, but the team
showed heart, and if nothing else, it’s
never, ever a bad thing to own the
rivalry from the start. While there’s
obviously no bowl game this year,
finishing the season at Hawaii is hardly
a bad way to go.
